Having real world experience with both...as in having shot both and been shot at with both....I can say that both work as they were intended to.
I prefer the CAR-15 with its 14.5 inch barrel , to either..but that really don't matter.

As for the OP , He had a rifle , and the skill with which to use it.
And while I do not like to to read of the death of others....
A good rule for not dying is ....Don't go and "invade" other people's houses.
