I would guess ....MAS-49 / 56 looking like it might have the grenade launcher attracted to the muzzle.

I wonder if the French wanted the magazine to stay in the rifle...and to reload with stripper clips...
Kinda like the Lee Enfield series of rifles ....?
So they put the magazine catch on the magazine for the MAS 49 and MAS 49/56 rifles.
