I have a friend that has had this for many years, inherited from his uncle. He believes it to be 8mm but can't remember for sure. Any chance anyone is able to make heads or tails our of the markings on the gun? I can't see any other markings on it.

What is the crest...?
( On top of the receiver...where the receiver meets the barrel )

Pictures of the whole rifle / Carbine would be helpful as well.

I'd guess it is a Iranian Model 49 Carbine....
Or maybe a Iranian / Persian Mauser 98/29

The OP's rifle still should be verified first hand by a gun smith to know for sure, but based on the little detail we can see right now I would venture to say it is this:

More detail about the Persian Mauser Model 98: (scroll down a few pages)

Additional AI info:

The Persian Mauser Model 98/29 is chambered in 7.92×57mm Mauser, commonly referred to as 8mm Mauser. These rifles, produced by the Brno factory in Czechoslovakia for Iran during the 1930s, are known for their long 29.1-inch barrels, high-quality manufacturing, and Farsi markings.
Key Details:
  • Caliber: 7.92×57mm (8mm Mauser).
  • Manufacturer: Brno (Czech).
  • Years Produced: Approximately 1931–1938.
  • Action: Bolt-action, based on the Mauser 98 system.
These rifles are widely considered some of the best-manufactured Mauser long rifles, often featuring high-quality walnut stocks and exceptional, bright, strong-rifled barrels.

I knew I should have taken a shot of the crest... My bad but I'll see if I can get down and do so.

That is the crest. I tried to post a pic but I don't know if it's loading or not.
