Dumb first world problem

Last time I got one of those at work nothing I wanted. So I showed it to Wife who found something she wanted and that was what I ordered.

Back in '85 I received this wonderful barometer for my 10th anniversary at my job.

I still use it every day, to hang stuff on.

My work gives us $100 per year of service every 5 years.
Last year was my 5 year and I got $500.

I used that to get a fantastic start on purchasing my Magnum Research 1911 in 45ACP.
It and the 10% coupon I found online made the out of pocket expense about $300.

Now in another 4 years I will have another choice to make...

Coming up on 20 years myself. Fortunately, my company gives cash at 20 years, I'll net a very useful $500 anniversary gift in just a couple more months.

But I get the whole, choose a gift thing. At 10 years it was a compact set of binoculars, at 15 years it was a barometer. Both of those were accompanied by a 5 week sabbatical. Got another of those coming up too…

I'm not really needing any advice on this one, just sharing. It has been bugging me though, because I can't seem to make a decision.

I crossed a work milestone recently, 20 years. I got a link to a catalog of anniversary gifts available, and it's all nice stuff: electronics, jewelry, golf clubs, cookware, etc.. I looked up a number of these things on Amazon and such, and it's all in the $400 price range, nothing to sneeze at.

The problem is, there's literally nothing in the catalog of any interest to me, at all. Nothing I need, nothing I'd even use. I wonder what that says about our culture. It would be nice if they would just dump $400 into my 401K. Maybe I should just choose the most valuable item and try to trade it for a gun or something, though I don't need another gun either.

Yeah, silly first world problems...

I went for utility. First time was a nice set of GMRS radios for my kids. 2nd was a set of Henckels knives. Third time was a deluxe Dyson vacuum.
All are still in use.

Well, there's your problem right there... the difference between "need" and "want"...

My wallet keeps saying "hey there are credit cards in here saying use me, use me" The one thing the stupid laws here have been good for is keeping me from buying anything since most of what I would buy is a no go here now.

I scored on my wife's gifts from PGE several times, but mostly it is unusable crap. I got a DeWalt portable compressor that I just took out of the box a few days ago after 15 or more years. My big compressor threw a belt and I have a slow leak in one of my tires that needed refilled. I forgot to turn off the compressor after using it and it ran for several weeks, part of it was without a belt, which made the motor run continuously. It drops pressure due to several small leaks and kicks on periodically if not turned off. The motor didn't sound good when I went in the shop.

I also scored a set of Kershaw knives.

Id find something that would increase in value. That way its kind like the 401K.
