Dogs and HEAT!!!

Ok, some may know this some may not and I have had dogs all of my teenage and adult life and this was new to me.

Timing was great because my pup was out in the heat a lot Saturday with a new heavy duty harness on her and I had watched this about a week before. When I saw that shovel tongue I got her in a vehicle with the AC going and watched the tongue return to normal and the panting eventually stop. It took about 30 min.

@Andy54Hawken mentioned animals in the heat thread so I thought would post this since I was already sending the link to a friend.

We have a large water bowl that is always out and always kept fresh.
Not only for our dog and cat...but we do get neighbor's dogs and cats over for a visit / play time.
Deer and birds also drink from it...and suffer from the heat.

Shade is available as well.
Keep an eye on your pets....

My dogs a snob or I'm cheap cuz bottled Costco water for her to drink is way cheaper then a vet visit and meds or worse.

She also has a very hard time regulating water consumption and we have to either meter it out over time or constantly tell her to walk away from it to take a breath.

Using bottles is a great way for the wife and I to verify she is drinking enough each day without assuming the other one has given her a bunch.


A side habit I've always had is freezing those bottle in the summer and using them in the cooler for days.

Thanks for posting. My pooch is black. Just a short walk to the park on a sunny day gets her panting in no time. Even on cooler days. Short, out and back walks is what we do with her.

My dog likes to hangout with me in the garage, I ended up getting a swamp cooler for those hot days, they don't eat up much electricity but it does take the edge off. She just lays out on the floor in front of it while I drink beer and watch TV

GREAT video! Infrared thermal guns are about $20 and well worth it. It's not just the risk of heatstroke, but also the possibility of getting their feet burned as well.

It's not just the blacktop and sidewalks in the city, but rocky and sandy areas that can get very hot. A buddy of mine that just moved to the Phoenix area was shocked when he scanned his yard, garden and pet areas and wound up getting booties for his dog the same day.

I know someone who got 3rd degree burns and his whole foot blistered off just from trying to walk barefoot on the sidewalk to check the mail. Had to go to the hospital and couldnt walk for a while.

I wear shoes but if I take the dog for a walk I check the sidewalk temp by hand first, ive turned back a few times its really crazy how hot it can get.

Resting in the shade after the morning walk and romp in the backyard. When she tires of being here, it'll be indoors, she has her own a/c vent that she lays on to get cool and comfortable. Take care of those pups in the heat, they feel it much quicker than we do.

I live outside of San Antonio TX, which is considered South Central Texas. During summer months it usually averages mid 90s. That is June-July-August and September. In other words It's really hot!

I have 2- 90 pound Rhodesian Ridgebacks. They will go out and lay in the outside grass or porch. During summers I try and never let them stay outside more than 20+ minutes. In Texas most floors are tile so they will come in and sprawl out and pant like locomotives!! Always a full water bowl (not outside- too hot!). I put a hanging screen door (w/ the magnets down the middle) so they can come and go at will.

Dogs 'sweat' through their mouths, not their skin. Originally thought I wanted a co-pilot but S Texas heat is not conducive to having dogs in cars.
