Hmm I'm not sure I have a SHTF rifle. I have a couple that depending on the mood I might grab should I have to leave the house long term. But I have no plan on leaving right the hepp here.

But for fun lets say its an Inland M1 carbine. I have 30 loaded mags for it. My only mag fed semi auto.

You use them to get the books from the high shelves? We used to use ladders. None of the ladders had scopes, either.
Nah...no snagging books with spears..... :D
I have 'em 'cause I love history.
The one shown...a very basic "Dark Age" / Medieval one...and a reproduction , hand forged Iron Buffalo Lance.
The one shown works well....was used to dispatch a wood rat one of our cats brought in to play with.
That was one epic battle....:D

You'll notice Andy's picture is titled "thrusting spear" and his eyes say.... Well.... There will be "spear" thrusting

My "go-to"' AR has an Eotech 512 and backup rear sight. Basic front sight of course.

Not sure which one I would call my "SHTF gun". But all of them in contention for that title (ha ha) have optics. Some have near "go to war" quality optics and some have middle of the road optics. Many that I would not use for SHTF scenario have low end optics.

For me the optic price kind of fits their current use and expected use. Fe some 22s with irons fe a $49 shake awake multi reticle red dot adds a lot of functionality and fun, especially as our eyes age. No slide to beat on it, low recoil. It's likely to last a long time in that scenario. Plus with optic technology they will likely to be outdated soon. And I don't want to be on an optic upgrade treadmill for the range guns. With the way it's going in 3-5 years we are going to see thermal red dots/prisms in the $300 range. Just what I do and may not be the right way for the next guy.

While I admire those with great eye sight, my eyes need help identifying things outside of 10 yrds. I have a few rifles with red dots, mostly for weight savings. They have a role in near targets or man sized targets at range but everything else has either low power optics to why do you need that?

If thats your thrusting spear, where is your chunking spear?

These kinds of threads are always good for a laugh.
If your miles from nowhere, why would you need to leave your home in a SHTF situation.
If you're in a more urban/suburban environment when you come back, there won't be anything there to come back to, (or maybe someone inside waiting for you).
In a real SHTF scenario an empty house is fair game.
Can your wife fight off some bad guys and keep the kids safe while you're away?
That is, if someone else doesn't decide to pop you in the back and take whatever you got on you while you're "hopping down the trail".

I live at the top of a hill, so my SHTF will vary depending on the distance I am forced to defend my hill. A 6x Leopold with back-up peep sights will do, until I have to go to the boat. Then offshore with a 360° field of view...the big glass will come into play all the way to the horizon.

Let's say there was a catastrophe and you were forced to evacuate an area on foot with one long gun. Would your rifle have a scope or just a red dot/iron sights ?
16" AR with 4x16 scope with XL style red dot diving board mount on top. Takes care of pretty much anything inside 500 yards.
