With regard to going to a shop with your wife, and this is JMHO, if the sales staff tries to push anything gold plated, pink or any kind of pistol 'for the little lady' without being asked specifically for that, I would either ask for another clerk to help us or just turn around and try another store
 
I'm looking at getting a new pistol and I want a compact model but can't decide on what to get? Any suggestions on maybe what to stay away from and maybe what I should get I really like the Taurus G3C but I feel like there is better compacts out there and I'm thinking either a 9mm or 40.
Another vote for visiting a range with rentals if possible...
You are asking a good question regarding what firearms to avoid. If you see a consensus on that, I would avoid that option.
 
Since this is your first firearm and also for your wife, I'd suggest sticking with a 9mm for ease of shooting. Also since you intend to carry it, I'd suggest something with good aftermarket support, especially with regards to holsters.
