Just started doing the whole bourbon hunting thing for fun. Buddy got me into it and been having a good time searching over Christmas break. Anyone else here a bourbon fan?

Attached a photo of my small collection so far.

Woodinville Straight is one of my favorites.

Montana is covered with micro distilleries making outstanding whiskeys bourbons.

Nice! That Woodinville is "Brett's Pick" I had to wait in line at the distillery for that since they only released 150 bottles total.

I used to help Brett & Orlin bottle when they first got started. Ended up meeting Dave Pickerell on one occasion when he was there who encyclopediaed my bubblegum about distilling!

As far as large national distilleries, Four Roses produces some of my favorites. There used to be a shop in Monroe who would hand select barrels and sell a single-barrel batch once a year. Unfortunately they are no longer around.

Hows the collection look now? I noticed this was from a few years back. I have quite a collection as well and love the chase!

Thought I heard somewhere that true bourbon could only be made in Kentucky. Anybody else ever hear anything along those lines?
True bourbon is made in Bourbon Kentucky. True Scotch is made in Scotland. True Brandy is Britain. All others are whiskey.

No. To be called Bourbon, it must meet the following conditions:

1. Be distilled in the USA (anywhere).
2. Be aged in new oak barrels.
3. Contain at least 51% corn.
4. Bottled at 80 proof or more.
5. Distilled at 160 proof maximum.
6. Barreled at 125 proof maximum.

To be called Straight Bourbon, it must be aged a minimum of 2 years.

Bourbon is an enjoyable rabbit hole.
It's been fun.

Right now my two go to adult beverages are:

Michter's Sour Mash
Bull Run American Whiskey 15yr + finishing in Pinot Noir casks.

.....I just noticed it's Happy Hour.
Cheers.

You could always buy something really nice... and... give him the last half of the bottle. :s0140:
Or just the empty bottle and let him know i was thinking of all the hard work he put in while I was drinking it! I wouldn't mind spending a couple hundred dollars or more on him. Just don't know what to buy. He put up about 3000 tons of hay this summer for me

The fam had a taste test just the other day (not blind). Woodford Reserve Single Malt was two peoples favorite, and Redbreast 12 Cask Strength was the choice of the other three.
How was the taste test conducted?

Shot poured over single large ice cube?

Double in whiskey glass with 5 or less ice cubes?

Neat?

Oooo.... get him some Blanton's Single Barrel so he can get started on collecting the tops.
