In all fairness, how would providing arms to Viet Nam be any different from providing arms and forming military alliances with South Korea or Japan? We were at war with those countries also, but now they are allies.

Well we weren't at war with So Korea and we never armed Japan .In fact we never let them have a standing "army" but I believe a national police force?
