In my experience there is a lot of truth in both these statements :

It costs you nothing to be kind...yet your kindness may be priceless to others.
And
No good deed goes unpunished.

Please note that I am not saying to go out and be unkind or less than excellent to others...Far from it.

But I have noticed that in my life , there are people who mistake my kindness and soft spokenness as weakness...
It is never wise to assume something from someones demeanor.
