I remember going with my BIL to the gun range years ago now and shooting wadcutters quite a bit in mid to late 1980s even. For putting holes in paper target they were GTG.

AKA fully wadomatic

Mid-range wadcutter is how I recall them being labeled, indeed they would feed in a S&W Model 52 or a 1911 setup for mid-range wadcutters. Great bullseye round. As has been mentioned, cuts nice clean holes in paper targets.

As has been mostly addressed ITT already...

These are designed specifically for competition target shooting — to consistently cut a clean round hole through paper for scoring purposes.

While not designed to expand on impact, there are some that have speculated that they could be viable SD rounds; for their potential to not over-penetrate — due to not being round-nosed like typical FMJ.

In a pinch, sure why not? But, when having access to proven quality JHP SD ammo, why would ya?

Use the right tool for the job. Go punch some paper with 'em.

Thank you all. I think "wadcutter" has been established. Can anyone tell me more? Use in a 3" revolver? What about that lever gun I'm seeking?
Loaded and shot many thousands of these back in the 80s. Looks specifically like the classic 148 Hollow Base Wad Cutter or 38 HBWC.
Bullseye or Unique powders were the most common.

Bigger hole equals higher score. Liners are in.

S&W Model 52 Wish I had one.

I recall articles many moons ago about handloading the HBWC bullets backwards in the case, which supposedly gave a load that expanded out of a 2" bbl. As noted, this was before they made the bullets that we have today.

WC ammo is great for the reasons mentioned in post #32. And the pictures......wow. That brings back memories.

I used WC .38 special while shooting PPC (Police Practical Combat). Here is a look at two (2) of my PPC revolvers.

I was using my 357 magnum 686-1 L-Frame to shoot 38 spcl both semi-wadcutters and wadcutters years ago. Brings back good memories when rounds were really less expensive. I paid less than $10 for a box of 50 rounds back then. I believe it was $12.99 for 50 rounds of 357 magnum JHP back then as well.

I have a couple boxes of these.
Some are copper top, most just regular lead "full" wadcutter. I always heard that anecdotal information about wounding potential with less chance of overpenatration. Probably better options available now in the 21st.
My Marlin doesn't like them, like a kid with green vegetables, just won't eat em.
