I'll get out of my vehicle or house to help someone but I won't to confront someone. If it's a confrontation my mind looks for advantages such as cover, methods to escape, etc.ABSOLUTELY! NO argument or reason to NOT go outside armed on one's property to investigate anything!
I do it OFTEN. Maybe not necessarily in response to a noise or sounds but hey, I often walk between my shop and house armed - sometimes loaded and sometimes just because I am working on/cleaning guns etc. but such is life.
I believe I once posted a 'semi - funny' story about answering my front door on a Saturday afternoon while armed in a NON threatening manner and the response from those at the door!
The tough part is as you are going to help you have to be aware it may be a ruse or some drugged out or crazy person. That's where observation at a distance is such a help. You can assess is this someone you really should help?, what's the actual situation (eg is it a domestic disturbance or is that neighbor shooting people?) etc. most times it's a no brainer. 2 days ago an older lady in a Lexus had a flat near me and was going to jack up her car with tiny jack on big loose cobbles. I stopped her and said please use this floor jack it's much safer. Most situations are like that. Normal person who is not any sort of threat.
