I'm obviously new here. Intrigued by the threads I've read thus far and have enjoyed learning. I was born in Ukraine and moved to the USA at the age of 2. Been a US citizen since 18 and love this country. Became interested in guns at the age of 25 and this year took up hunting. Thanks for accepting me into your awesome family. Excited to learn more about laws, rules, regs, and stand up for our 2nd ammendment. I bought an AR10 as my first rifld and since I want to hunt, looking to sell it and but a 300 win mag. If anyone has recommendations on make and model, or has another caliber I should look into, please respond. I've been looking at Bergara Rifles as the price to quality ratio seems to fit. But open to recommendations. Thanks guys and gals.

Welcome to NWFA.

A 300 Winchester is a lot of gun for a beginning shooter and hunter. I'd recommend you keep your 308 ammunition and buy a 308 rifle. Use the FMJ for practice only, and the soft point for hunting.

After you get some experience, you will have experience-backed reasons to upsize or not.

IMO, keep the AR10 as a hunting backup, if you want a dedicated hunting rifle be sure to test rife someones 300 win mag... they are not a whole lot of fun to shoot, and are absolutely not needed to hunt any big game in north America. Common easier to shoot all around big game hunting calibers are between 6.5 to 30calibers from the 6.5 Creedmore to the classic 30-06. I typically recommend a 7mm Rem Magnum or a 280Ackley Improved will do it all without excessive recoil.

I wish I could. Wife said its either or. And I have another AR platform for...well you know. And thanks. I'll look into 6.5 creedmore. What's the availability in ammo compared to the others your mentioned and 300 win mag?

The 6.5 Creedmore factory ammo is widely available, very common very popular hunting caliber. Note: some hunters do not think its adequate for elk hunting, though I disagree I will let you be the judge just letting you know. 7mm Remington Ammo and 30-06 are classic hunting calibers that have been around for a long time, no availability issues with those. Same for 300 Win Mag, though the price of that is often even more expensive. The 280Ackley Improved is a great round but a fairly newer caliber, factory ammo is available online but not always stocked at local stores, it comes around. It does have a strong following with hunters I don't see it becoming obscure at all. Similar in ballistics to the 7mmRM but it really excels when one handloads for it.

Since your looking for a new purchase, I recommend something with a faster twist rate than 1:9 will give you more options for ammo bullet selection but its not a deal breaker.

Welcome to NWFA !
If you plan to hunt deer and elk, I don't see anything wrong with 300 Win Mag as a do-all rifle.

Others would be :
7mm Rem Mag
30-06
280 Rem or 280 Ackley

Bergara has a Rem 700 footprint so upgrading the stock should be easy.
For other brands :
Tikka has a big following - I don't like the "modernistic" look of it.
The new RemArms (Model 700) are getting good reviews.
Winchester Model 70
Weatherby Vanguard (Howa action)

Welcome to the forum! I am new here too. My first large game hunting rifle was a Remington M700BDL in 270 caliber. You can get many different bullet weights/types and it has been a highly effective at one shot kills for > 30 yrs (using 130 or 150 gr).

Welcome to The Board, the bestest li'l gun board there is! :)

I have never found a hunting need for anything bigger than a 30-06... which is just the .308's older brother and very similar in performance. My favorite round for hunting in Oregon is 6.5x55 but my 6.5x55 rifles predate the introduction of 6.5 Creedmore. My recommendation would also be a 6.5 Creedmore.

I am too old and set in my ways to ever take an AR anything hunting. Go for a nice 6.5 Creedmore bolt action.
