I had a Simpson in the 90s. Can't remember the SN but it seems that they were made somewhere into the late 800s.
I sold it for $850 to a guy who knew just how rare they really were.
Curious to note, however, IN That Simson & Sons started out as blacksmiths but got into firearms & mfgd K98 Mausers in WW I.
After the War most of Germany's Arms Manufacturing Companies got sucked up into Gvmnt control.
Simpson got to buy back their Firm & produced again. Then Adolph Sucked up everything as well but, and I'm drawing from old memories, but Methinks That They were the only company that got to do so.

I had several Makarovs & I felt that the craftmanship was better on the Simpsons.

Thanks guys! This one is in the 500s,the finish is nice, not very good pics with the glare, anyway never shot it .Maybe I better just shoot my Bulgarian and keep this for a collector piece.ha

Simson (no "p") was owned by a Jewish family and was expropriated under the Nazi government. After WW2, the communist government took it over. There is utterly no company connection between older Mauser design rifles and East German Simson guns except recycling the name and the city of manufacture.

I think I've read that Simson was making Maks for the DDR gov't before the commies were put out of biz. It was only after die Wende that those marked with the Simson name were made. Hence the short run. Because it became obvious fairly quickly that most of the various VEB concerns of the DDR were not economically viable. Especially when it came to military type goods. Simsom was making motorbikes like crazy under the DDR regime; it took another 10 or 12 years for that to fall apart.

Rare and desirable, just if its not listed on gunbroker or auction don't expect auction prices. I had higher end guns like that I had a difficult time getting rid of due to limited market. Lots will buy a normal east German for 600, but not a lot are into a 1k plus rare varient of a makarov. I've wanted a Russian military makarov for years but im not paying 1k, 800 sure. Likely need to list online to get the full price, though then fees cut out some profit. I stopped locally listing the high end stuff never sells good unless its online sadly.

That's a lovely Mak. If I came across one I'd be willing to add it to my collection but modern prices have kept me to the more affordable stuff.

A genuine 50's/early 60's Russian military, preferably without any stupid import graffiti, is probably the only one I'd consider parting with actual $$$ for. It's high on the want list. Got enough "pedestrian" versions.

But you do have a nice one there. Condition appears awesome.

Oh, and I'm intrigued by Khyber Pass guns. I'm just not sure how to really know when I'm seeing one. Probably easier when you have it in hand. Buying stuff online drives me nuts.

Yeah thanks!l think the price on these is so high because less than 1000 were made.If you think about it any other gun with that few being made would bring a huge premium.limited availability trumps most things including guns.

Allow me to piggyback on here, please.
My wife has a Russian Mak she inherited. Unfortunately it is import marked. It came with a couple of holsters, one original with a mag pocket and one a carry piece. It's in nice condition and has the second mag.
Where can I find info to age this gun and find it's worth?
Thanks

Those came in with that rear sight as target /sport pistols to get around the military surplus restrictions. They are good pistols, some were chambered in 380 but most in 9x18.They dont bring near the price of a fixed sight model but are same quality.I have one in 9x18.

IJ-70's are the least desirable to collectors. But as mentioned above, they're nice little pistols. I only have one. Seems they felt a bit spendy at $300-350 about a year ago. Not sure what I'd pay for one now..... maybe $300 in trade. But I'm not any kind of authority here. Maybe people really want these now...

I have an IJ-70-17A with adjustable rear site in 380 ACP.
I bought it in the early 90's for $125 with a box of ammo, holster and an extra magazine.
It's a good shooter.

Just bought a 2nd Mak to take the shooting pressure off my Sneaker Russian Mil gun since I shoot it a lot. New one is a Baikal with adjustable rear sight. Scored it recently on GB for $200! Shoots just as amazing as my 1st one. I've made it my "range gun". Grabbed a new Fab Defense grip from Optics Planet marked down to $22. The original Mak Grip is already comfortable but the Fab is amazing. The back of the grip is just a bit wider and really softens the recoil snap. Plus it adds the nice feature of a more modern Thumb Mag release. Scored some Leghigh Xtreme Penetrator bullets for reloading. They shoot great as well.
