Pros
  • Robert can be a fairly nice guy
  • Sometimes cheap. As in, inexpensive. Until you have to right his wrongs.
Cons
  • Terrible traning
  • Doesnt tell you if he cant do something
First experience i had robert order and install night sights on a pistol. When i brought the pistol to have them installed he happily did the work on the spot using punch and mallet which is fine by me. The part that irked me was that he was having some sort of trouble getting the rear on and pulled out a dremel- scratched the piss out of the slide. I wished he had mentioned that what he was doing was necesarry and that there was potential for the finish to be removed.

Years later my mother and i took his "enhanced" concealed weapons class.
This was an eight hour class with four hours of legal instruction. I learned absolutely nothing and was appalled to find that the vast majority of the instruction was robert babbling on incoherently about things not pertinent. Same with the "legal instruction" that somehow went so off -course that the sheriffs deputy who provided the instruction went on talking about vehicle head and taillight laws, proper license plate display and mudflaps. He even contradicted robert on numerous legal points.

Live fire was even worse with robert berating and harrassing the novice folks, in turn causing even more anxiety for them.

Do NOT take this class as a novice unless you are a glutton for punishment. I feel terrible for the many folks new to guns that had to experience this insanely terrible training.

I took 2 guns to them for repair/restoration work after they did a transfer for me. These guys are pure hacks. One time I left my Remington XP100 to have the stock changed from my left handed one to a right handed that I supplied. They told me "the stock was glued in and they couldn't remove it" off course...I knew better. Doug at Gunsmith soulitions had it apart and the stock changed at his counter in less than 10 min...(R&K had it for 3 weeks) R&K couldn't find th blind front mounting screw used to hold the stock in. then I left a classic Mauser to have the wrist repaired on the stock (they claimed to do great stock restoration work) they did a hack job and I objected......they took it back and sent it to a real craftsman in eastern Oregon (that I met later) to repair the repair. It came back kind of rough...obviously repaired but not the standard I wanted. When I went to pick the rifle up.....after months, they couldn't find all the parts!!! They had disassembled the gun and only sent the stock away. I went back 3 times insisting they find the pre war Mauser steel butplate......finally they discovered it sitting on someone's bench. I met the eastern Oregon stock restoration guy at a gun show some time later. I asked him about the job. He said they told him that I didn't have a lot of money to spend on the job.......absoultly insane. This is a 3,000 rifles and all I really cared about was a great job. I sent it back to the eastern Oregon restorer and it came back perfect, unable to see where the repair was ever done. These guys....,as I learned later.....pride themselves as being "self taught" gunsmiths........avoid them at all costs. I have lots of guns and spend thousands of dollars at smiths some years. I have lived all over the world......these guys are the worst I have ever encountered. I use Doug at Gunsmith Solutions (now in Kuna) for everything. Great guy, vast knowledge and training. Have never had a bad experiance with him. I probably own a stool or something at his shop, I have spent so much money there. He frequently charges so little, I double the payment to him......you have to take care of the good guys.

Took my Remington 700 to RK for troubleshooting excessive group size. He diagnosed the problem on the spot, asked great questions, gave the rifle a thorough inspection, and showed that he was very good at what he does. When I walked out I had the answer (excessive headspace) and plans A and B to move forward. Can't beat that.

Have had wonderful experiences with Robert and Mary at RK Gunsmithing in Nampa! My wife and daughter have taken the conceal class from him and I have taken his advanced pistol class. Lots of fun and very edudcational! Have had work done on several firearms and recently purchased a new Ruger LC9 from him. Looking forward to a lifetime friendship andbusiness relationship!
