Chest and Biceps day today. 184 lbs on the bench press today: two sets for 4 reps each set. đź’Ş I do two 45 plates before that to warm up, then those two working sets, then gradually remove weight for higher reps.

Not too shabby at all for an old guy!

41 fallen trees cut out yesterday, rainy but still fun. Only about two miles of trail until we hit snow.

Really appreciate the work you and your buds do clearing the trails of blowdowns, Jay! I can't hike anymore, but BITD when I backpacked much of the PCT and other trails around the state (and elsewhere, too), I always silently thanked the tough folks that did that. I've hiked miles of trails that never see any maintenance, and I can tell you, that is some serious work with 40 lbs on your back!

Thank you so much for the kind words Sobo, I am not as gung ho as I was back in my 40's but it is still pretty fun. Only 209 miles of trail to go. I focus mostly on the alpine trails along the north side of the Lewis River. Luckily there is multiple crews out, near our group of three yesterday was also a Son and His father that are die hard faithful and a retired Forest Service Guy that was digging in water bars at 75 or 76 years old? I see some videos showing good progress on the Randle area trails too. Going to be a great year.

It is nice that some long term injuries and pain very slowly seem to go away with time, mostly due to proper nutrition.

For years I could never do hammer curls even with light weights. Now I can work up to 35lb dumbbells with very strict form. Holding the weight for 1-3 seconds at the top and squeezing for all I can in the last set lowering the weight slowly. No jerking around, no body English.

Used to have pain during and after, comparable to tennis elbow. Now no pain except the good pain. Happy.
Perhaps another reason was I used to arm wrestle friends, which is dumb and asking for LT injuries.

I picked up heavy things and I put them back down. There's really no rhyme or reason to what I do but I see progress constantly so I gotta be doing it right. I have a date tomorrow with an excavator and replacing it's tracks, including pads on a new chain so that's gonna be arms all day.

Thinking I need to throw around my big 105 dumb bells again. Haven't done reps with those since October but when I was it was 4 sets of 6, sometimes I could manage up to 8 reps in a set but not usually. Suckers are heavy and I'm not getting younger

Unfortunately, the only "exercise" I've done is the workout I've given my fingers as I've typed this or other posts today ;)
No seriously, I know I need to be more physically active. I realize many will say that I'm just making "excuses" but my reality is that I currently telework; which is both a good and bad thing, but mostly good. But that also means I'm sitting all day in front of computer monitors for 8 hours. I work in IT as a Systems Administrator.

Back in 2005 before I relocated from California to Oregon, I was involved in a 4 car pile-up on I-50 near Sacramento and although I did go to a chiropractor to recover and got a settlement for it, my lower back has never been the same. I have since gained a lot of weight and the heavier I've gotten, the more pain I feel in my lower back when I'm doing any walking or physical movement for any longer than 10 minutes. I don't like being in pain.

I'm single and live alone so obviously I do things for myself since no one else is here to do things for me. I still go to the grocery store and buy groceries etc. but even doing that is painful. I know I need to eat better; and to some degree I have been, as well as get some exercise but doing any kind of physical exercise results in my lower back pain and sitting down almost instantly relieves that pain. The pain itself is a deterrent for me.

I probably should see a doctor to fully investigate why I feel pain in my lower back and find a way to get past/improve it and I eventually will. But I really don't like Doctors (or Dentists for that matter) because every time I've gone to one, I've never felt like they truly care about my ailment.

One thing I have been trying to do which I had hoped would give me more motivation to get in better shape; is started getting into competition shooting. Specifically IDPA. I actually completed my very first match which happened to be the "qualifier" for last year and it was physically exerting for me but I got through it and it was a ton of fun. I planned on doing several regular matches this year but I haven't even been to the gun range that I'm a member of since that match. I've been struggling to make myself do that much. The range is about hour drive from where I live unfortunately, so between gas prices and ammo; though I do have a small stockpile of that, it's difficult for me to be motivated to go. I know there are public places where it is legal to shoot. But the problem I have with those places; is one being confident on whether it really is legal to shoot at those location but more importantly, who else will be there and whether who is there are responsible and know how to safely handle their firearms. I'm not 100% comfortable going to those places; especially not by myself.

Anyway, enough rambling. Obviously, I have things I need to figure out.

Been hitting the gym 3X a week since I was 16. Now at 55, I usually attempt to work the major muscle groups with weight machines or dumbells and do some cardio which might include bag work at the end. In between exercises, I usually perform one stretching exercise. I have had a back issue in the past and currently take knee injections. At 5'4 140, I am in relatively decent shape.

Now let's talk about T Boosters. Anyone taking any they could recommend? I tried one 2 weeks ago but I can't feel a difference so will probably go with another brand with different ingredients in it.

Another crappy rainy day here. Looks like I'll have to hit the treadmill. I'm not big on working out anymore. Loved it when I was younger, almost to the point of addiction. I sold my universal gym fifteen years ago. I do use the treadmill fairly frequently, watching hunting videos while I walk. Typically, I'll do a 30-minute session at 3.4 mph. That's a comfortable pace for my short legs without having to run.

I still get lots of exercise, but it's in the context of having fun. Weather permitting, I play golf a couple of times a week, usually without a cart. Some things I've read indicate you walk about 6 miles playing a standard 18-hole course. I still cut and split my own firewood by hand. When I hit sixty, my wife offered to buy me a gas-powered splitter, but I told her the workout won't hurt me a bit. (Some of those oak rounds though ). Most of my exercise revolves around hunting-related activities. Right now, it's bear season. It's also shed hunting season. Well, it's ALWAYS shed hunting season. My buddy and I usually have a dozen or more trail cameras spread out in the national forest. We are both long since retired, so we have nothing better to do. We can end up covering many miles just checking those, which we do at least once a week. I also participate in a lot of archery 3D shoots. The goal for all of my activities is to be in shape for the bow elk season at the beginning of September. That's what "keeping your eye on the prize" is for me. We usually spend a couple of weeks over on the east side of the state chasing elk, and that is better than Christmas morning to me.

My wife likes to hike, so that is helpful to me as well. Sometimes she will even go shed hunting or camera checking with me. She isn't very tall but keeps up fairly well. She's five years younger than me, so that helps too.

I could definitely eat better, but I do enjoy my food. Particularly elk steaks!

Nothing wrong with Elk Steaks! To be honest wasn't expecting that last line. All I hear these days is 'Yeah, sounds great but I love Wine, I love Pizzas, I love sugar, I have no time for cooking so I eat microwave foods, I drink a lot of soda pop ....... then why bother working out? Food is 85%, working out is 15%.

Every time I see a person working super hard at the gym lifting or running AND I see a big Gatorade or Prime drink my thought is instantly - what a waste of time.

I'm somewhere in the middle. The only microwave food I eat is warmed up leftovers. I'm weening myself off of diet soda. I'm down to probably five a week instead of two a day. That stuff's not good for anything. I do love pizza though.

You're spot on about the waste of time aspect. I don't get as much good out of my golf exercise as I could, because I usually have a beer or two in the process. It does help with stamina though.

For an older 5' 10" 220# fat boy, I can handle the hills over east pretty well. (I'm the same age as you.)
