There is a "C" shaped retainer clip that rests in a groove inside the roller and roller post on an M-1A bolt. Never seen anyone, ever, break one of these. Somehow I did it. The roller came loose and made it damn near impossible to get the bolt to come loose from the operating rod. Twas a PITA to fix. Loved paying $9 shipping for a $2.50 part.

C clips are heat treated and it's possible you got one that had internal defects. Bad luck.
