I know a gal that rents out her time ........ she's nothing to look at but she most certainly will scare the hell out the deer ...... ;)

So my last try was to connect my sprinkler system to a motion detector. after a couple times getting soaked for walking over my lawn the cats learned to go way around my house!

using a motion detector to power up a 24v transformer and power up a sprinkler valve might scare away the deer and keep your garden green! DR
Yes, this is another idea that I've considered. One of very many that I've read about online. Haven't done it yet.

The thing is, there is only so much effort this is worth getting into. Meaning, is what I'm growing worth the expense, effort and anguish. Insofar as the vegetable garden is concerned, its success depends on several other variables. Which present their own thresholds of worthiness. Better said, "Am I better off buying these zucchini from Fred Meyer, or do I want to buy the seed, plant, cultivate, water, protect, and hope that the weather will cooperate?"

The permanent plants I'm more invested in. I've got my fig trees stockaded pretty good. Last Fall, even way after the leaves were gone, the deer were chewing the bark off the wood. They even chewed a cactus plant that was next to one of the figs. They've nibbled a bit on blueberries but those don't seem to be a favorite. They've had at my raspberry canes, but those will recover in the Spring. Non-native stuff is what they really go for. Oh, and the new growth on madrona saplings. The rhododendrons, azaleas and lilacs they leave alone.

The rubber buckshot or round ball ammo is not even on the same league noise wise. When I bought some to play with in case needed they would not let me use them at the range. So I tried them out and home and they sound nothing like a shotgun blast. So as long as neighbors could not see you out there with a long gun? You would be fine. Those hearing it would assume you were using one of those noise bombs maybe, would not think of it as gun fire. Would discourage the hell out of the pests. I bought 2 kinds of it made by S&B. The buckshot rounds penetrate a handful of layers of cardboard and stopped. The other rounds that have 2 rubber balls sailed clean through about 20 layers of cardboard. Those would have to hurt like all hell.
It took me a while to dig these out. This is what I bought years ago, before I had a deer problem. Just one of those, "You never know what you'll need" things.

Note the picture on the box, it shows problem animals. Deer, bear, and ... pit bull on a leash.

This thread is so funny. My brother has been dealing with deer eating his arborvitaes bushes that line his property line. They eat only at their head height so all the bushes have "waistlines" and it's driving him crazy. lol.

They've tried everything, including wolf piss. How do they even collect that to sell? It works but as soon as it rains they're back at it.

Here we are going on nearly a year since. In the meantime, I sent away for these plastic surrounds made in sections that I put up to protect these two trees in future. The bark is healing nicely on both trees; a couple of weeks ago I decided it was time to cover the remaining bare spots with Tree Seal to prevent it getting dry and punky before it could completely cover with new bark. Both trees had new growth this year so I expect they will make it.

Cougar scent is sold to nurseries. It works, hung on a small drawstring bag from the victim tree.

Urinating around the tree (yes, YOU) may also be an effective deterrent. (It worked for me on a Caribou kill against Wolves).

Correct. An arrow does not carry much "shock", but it doesn't need to. It's mechanism of killing is hemorrhage.

But do not for a minute think an arrow cannot kill suddenly and definitively. According to a buddy who witnessed, this deer went down "like it was hit with a .30-06!".

I can say with conviction that coastal blacktail deer are not affected by the smell of human urine. I have wizzed out of my treestands on several occasions and deer actually have went up and curiously sniffed the area I watered. Not sure this holds true for all deer species in all areas though. gmerkt is dealing with coastal blacktails just like I hunt, so human urine is out for a deterrent.

I feel your pain. Only a few carefully nurtured tomato plants between the houses, but darned if the deer didn't eat the tops and the almost ripe tomatoes. :(

Later, a large doe came up to the front door and set off my door bell camera.

Think it was to let me know they were still hungry.

BUGGAH !!

They will be coming to discuss the terms of your surrender.

Here is the little redwood that got damaged by deer with the new protective gear:

Those guards come flat, they lock together vertically with tabs. Then you stack each section in succession. I don't trust the tabs for stacking, so I used zip ties to do that.

The other tree that was damaged, an incense cedar from no. Calif., wasn't so badly hit.

I spent a Summer in Homer Alaska.
People there have to keep Moose out of their Gardens.
A bit more difficult. They lean against a fence and unless it is extremely well made it falls down!
