Hello new member here
I'm recently retired and just getting into shooting again. I'm looking for ideas for making a gun vice. I'm a tinkerer so I'd rather make then buy. Anyone on here have any pics of their homemade vise of any tools as far as that goes. I need a good way to hold my Mini 14 while I mount a LPVO scope. Thanks in advance.

I have always wanted a 'dedicated' gun vise, and may still build one but what I did out of 'necessity' one day was to make a set of hardwood leather faced 'chucks' for my large bench vise.

I can swivel the vise so when the gun is clamped in it I can rest the 'butt' on the bench on a pad and do whatever I need - including holding 'smaller' guns parts such as frames, slides, barrels etc. for whatever I need to do.

The upside is the gun is held very securely for nearly anything I need to do. Downside is it is 'stranded' out in my shop whereas a dedicated gun vise would be mobile to bring inside to use on my indoor 'gun room' bench.

Perfect, also looks like a good way to use up some of the lumber cutoffs I keep hoarding.
Thanks for the reply

For my rifles; I mounted a low cost wood clamp from Harbor freight. lined it with leather at the appropriate places. made an adjustable front with a leather and velcro strap so I can level it, or have it run up or down as needed to direct the cleaning fluid.
no picture, but a plastic soda bottle with the end cut off keeps any cleaning brush spray off me and the walls. I was going to make it length adjustable but never found the need.

How does the front strap attach on the side not shown? That's a great vice!

It has upholstery tacks just barely shown in this pic on one side with Velcro glued and sewn on the other and glues and tiny tacks on the wood part.
All my rifles are bare traditionally sized barrels and reason for the small dia cutout. More universal for rifles with shields and barrel guards might be better with a one inch radius arc for a cradle.
