JDubDub posted a new review for the resource China Hat Rd - Cabin Butte
China Hat - Cabin Butte
Overall Rating1.00 star(s)
Cons
  • Closed permanently

Not really a review - just an FYI. China Hat road s currently closed to all traffic and will remain closed for at least a year. When the area opens again Cabin Butte and other shooting areas along China Hat will be closed to all shooting PERMANENTLY. That's right - the Forest Service is closing the area to all shooting activity. Too much garbage left behind and too many complaints from residents and other land users.

On the plus side, the area will also be day use only to address the recent homeless issues. The plan is to patrol the area regularly to keep homeless out, but I'll be renegade shooters will be easier targets for law enforcement.

The ONLY time in 40 years I have ever been approached by a law enforcement officer was when shooting at the gravel pit off China Hat. The deputy was very polite and friendly.

I have not been able to pick up my fired brass at the China Hat gravel pit. Before I am even finished target practicing the homeless are scampering all over grabbing my brass. Once I was asked if I minded if they picked up my brass. 50ae brass is kind of expensive to give away.

Closing down the homeless camping out there is a good step in reducing human caused wild fires in a place very close in to Bend, OR.

I guess us Central Oregonians will have to find a new place to shoot. I personally prefer it when there are established sites like China Hat where everyone shoots instead of puddles of trash and empty cases scattered all over public land (which Trump wants to sell to private ownership).

Check out COSSA. A little further out, but members get 24/7 access, the facilities are clean and you can shoot out to 1400 yards.

Just wondering as to exactly what portion of China Hat Road is closed?

China Hat road (NF 18) is pretty long and eventually turns into Cabin Lake Road and eventually ends in Fort Rock.

I haven't been on China Hat road in several years so I am unfamiliar with the current closure.
