"So if you are thinking about coming into any of these areas to steal from our residents, I'm going to tell you something: You're going to be caught, you're going to be arrested and you're going to be prosecuted."

My version would be, "So if you are thinking about coming into any of these areas to steal, my friends and I will take you out before you even know you're being targeted and we'll leave your bodies in the road to be picked up later by the coroner."

I'm gonna say POSSIBLY an 'inside job' by reservists who knew how to get to the stuff - and knew how to operate the Hummers.

When I was an AGR for the ORANG 1st of the 82nd BN in Bend we had a Hummer stolen and I had GOOD IDEA at the time of who did it but not enough info for the local LEO to pursue it. It was ultimately later found in a very odd location...

Part time reservists, or National Guardsmen were not all prime 'pillars of the community' - at least at the time I was in.

Really nothing to operating them, not like M35s or older vehicles with manual transmissions and manual chokes

This isn't unimaginable to me. I'm sure security is better that it used to be.

Yet years ago, there was a USAR vehicle storage lot not far from where I live. It wasn't located near an armory or any other facility like that. There was an ANG facility down the road diagonally, but the two facilities were not related and not actually within sight of each other. The USAR lot was full of 5 ton trucks. There was no guard, only a chain link fence around it. This was before the days of cameras everywhere.

Maybe this sounds like I'm larcenous at heart. But when I'd go by this place, I'd think how easy it would be to steal one of the trucks. And then keep it. Because those things don't have license plates, just a painted on USA number, which I doubt the police would ever look at or question. You could just put on your fatigues and drive around and who would know the difference?

It gets worse. This turned into occasional dreams I'd have about actually executing it. But never were carried out. Now the vehicle storage area is long gone, those M809 series trucks are obsolete, the dreams haven't been had for 25 years.

A lot of similar places (Armories) don't have that much security; cameras and chain link fences, maybe barb wire topped fences but that's about it. Sometimes there's a guard booth on the entry but most of the times it's just a rolling fence gate and the guards are positioned in the building proper.

Organized looting of the entire country?
Lol. Ask the pros.

They only stole bayonets and Humvees because theyre relatively unsecured. Cut the wire, break a window. All the good stuff is locked up in the arms room.

Wasn't too many years ago that a depressed individual stole a tank from an Army reserve base in San Diego and went for a very destructive joy ride. Shot dead by SDPD.

Joining the army reserves in the mid 60's, we had old Koeran war trucks. We re just getting the multi-fuel 2 1/2 ton trucks. They were 5speeds and fun to drive. Much improved over the old Korean war trucks. Don't remember the model designation.
