Grandma worked with two guys that were in the war. One was a navigator on a B17 and after the war, she said he would never get on a plane again.
the second was in the Philippines when the war started. got to enjoy that lovely walk the Japanese had them do.. Said he always slept with a knife and almost killed his wife twice before she learned to wake him up by throwing a show at him.

Sadly, few know or care any more. Worse, little to no presence on the news now a days. More important to give space to the homeless camps and Medicare supplement ads than to give just a small moment, once a year, this day, to pause, reflect and impress on to our children how their life would be less fulfilled without the ultimate gift from tens of thousands patriots both past and present, dead and living. . Like many things today, I'm ashamed of what the new world has become.

When we lived in John Day (68-74) Dad's boss had been a B24 pilot during the war. When I knew him he raised appaloosa horses.
Reading a book now by Steven Ambrose.

They called it the forgotten war, that part of the air war with the 15th Air Force. They preferred to give more attention to the 8th air Force out of England. The book is kind of based on George McGovern. James Stewart, Clark Gable flew in the B-24. As did Andy Rooney and Walter Cronkite. Those planes were a real bit*h to fly.

I was also born in the early fifties. With a lot of my relatives that served during WWII. My grandfather was stationed at Pearl Harbor in the Navy, he served on the USS Vestal which was moored next to the USS Arizona. The USS Vestal was a Maintenace ship, one of the oldest in the Navy. When the bombing started, they were able move the ship and run it aground. When I was growing up my grandfather rarely talked about it. Two things that I remember that he said was that it was bad, and the water was on fire. Ironicly my grandmother, and family were getting ready to move to Oahu at the time, there furniture and belongings had already been shipped there.
I was watching Mike Rowe's podcast last night:

The life and service of Don Stratton as told by his granddaughter. Don was one of the six survivors of the USS Arizona saved by Joe George who served on the USS Vestal. Joe's story is fascinating. He was ordered to cut the lines but refused to until those six climbed over. Joe never mentioned it until 1978.
