The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI; Urdu: پاکستان تحريکِ انصاف or پی ٹی‌‌آئی, lit. 'Pakistan Movement for Justice') is a political party in Pakistan. It was founded in 1996 by the Pakistani cricketer-turned-politician Imran Khan. The PTI is one of the three major Pakistani political parties alongside the Pakistan Muslim League–Nawaz (PML–N) and the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), and it is the largest party in terms of representation in the National Assembly since the 2018 Pakistani general election. With over 10 million members in Pakistan and abroad, it claims to be Pakistan's largest party by primary membership as well as one of the largest political parties in the world.Despite Khan's popular image, the party had limited initial success. It failed to win a single seat in the 1997 and 2002 general elections; only Khan was able to win a seat for the party. The PTI remained in opposition to the pro-Pervez Musharraf's government led by the Pakistan Muslim League–Quaid (PML–Q) and later boycotted the 2008 Pakistani general election, accusing it of being conducted with fraudulent procedures. The rise of the Third Way during the Musharraf era created a new centrist bloc in Pakistani politics, as opposed to the centre-left PPP and the centre-right PML–N. When the PML–Q began to decline following the end of Musharraf's presidency, much of its centrist voter bank was lost to the PTI. Around the same time, the PPP's popularity began to decrease after the disqualification of Yousaf Raza Gillani in 2012. The PTI appealed to many former PPP voters, particularly in Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, due to its populist outlook.
In the 2013 Pakistani general election, the PTI emerged as a major party with over 7.5 million votes, ranking second by number of votes and third by number of seats won. At the provincial level, it was voted to power in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. During its time in opposition, the PTI, with the help of popular slogans such as Tabdeeli Arahi Hai (lit. 'change is coming'), mobilized people in rallies over public distress on various national issues, the most notable of which was the 2014 Azadi march. In 2018, it received 16.9 million votes, the largest for any political party in Pakistan so far. It formed the government of Pakistan in coalition with five other parties for the first time with Khan as prime minister. In April 2022, Khan's government was removed due to a successful no confidence vote against him. PTI governs Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Punjab at the provincial level and acts as the largest opposition party in Sindh, while also having significant representation in Balochistan.Officially, the party aims to create an Islamic-socialist welfare state, and to dismantle religious discrimination in Pakistan. The PTI terms itself an anti-status quo movement advocating an egalitarian Islamic democracy. It claims to be the only non-dynastic party of mainstream Pakistani politics. Since 2019, the party has been criticized by its political opponents and analysts for its failures to address various economic and political issues, particularly Pakistan's economy, which weakened amid the COVID-19 pandemic in Pakistan. However, as the COVID-19 pandemic began to subside, Imran Khan's PTI were praised for leading the country's economic recovery. It has also faced backlash for its crackdown on the Pakistani opposition as well as increased censorship through curbs on Pakistani media outlets and freedom of speech.
