Let me detail my experiences with Jim Rogers of Doc Neelys gun shop in Port Angeles, Wa.
First off, I've lived in this town my whole life. Doc Neelys and specifically Jim Rogers, the owner, has a reputation in this town for being a cranky and nasty person to deal with. Many, many people in this town won't set foot in his shop because of the way they have been treated by Jim specifically.

The first time I walked into his shop back in 2010 I had the same experience. I had a rough, no finish parts gun High Standard model B shipped to his shop for a transfer, won via online auction from a private seller for $50. The seller shipped the gun in a pistol case in a box.
Before Jim started conducting the transfer, he insisted I needed an invoice from the seller so he could charge me Washington state sales tax. I told him I didn't have an invoice but that I had paid $50 for the gun.
Jim straight up called me a liar, told me there is no way i'd paid that because he'd charge more in his shop, and accused me of "trying to mess him up with the ATF". I decided I didn't need a rusty parts gun enough to put up with that, so I told him "fine, you deal with it then", and walked out.
I didn't go back for about 10 years.

I decided to pop back in a few years ago just to see if he'd gotten less cranky over the years. Seemed ok for a while, I bought a few cheaper guns, and a few more expensive guns. Over the next two years I purchased approximately $6000 worth of guns from him, sold a gun or two on consignment that went quickly and netted him an easy profit.
In that time there were a few other incidents that kind of annoyed me, but nothing crazy.
He had a commercial luger in his shop for a good price, labeled as a 9mm, so I bought it. When I picked it up after the transfer was approved, I gave it a really good look over and saw it wasn't a 9mm. It was a .30 Luger. I pointed this out and said that I wanted a refund because I wanted a gun I could easily find ammo for.
Jim then straight up lied to my face and told me that I should just keep it because "Commercial lugers in .30 luger were actually very rare". This is an outright bald faced lie meant to mislead me to complete a sale. I knew this to be a lie as I had been researching commercial lugers since I had purchased it.

Another example was when I brought in a Remington Rand 1911A1 to be shipped to an expert for appraisal and then perhaps offered as a subsequent consignment sale through Jims shop.
Jim looked over the gun rather flippantly, and its original government shipping box, and declared that he was an expert on military 1911's, that the box was fake and the gun was aresenal refinished and worth less than $2000. By this time I had done enough research to know he was full of it and didn't know an original gun from Adam. The gun was shipped to Scott through Jims shop and appraised by Scott Gahimer as being 100% original and complete, in its original box, and appraised for about 4x what Jim valued it at.

Fast forward to a few weeks ago. I had a Savage 99 shipped in from an online auction, an older featherweight from the 50's in .308 with a brass cartridge counter, the combination i'd been looking for, for a long time. Now Jim had a 99 for sale but it was an economy E model from the 80's with cheap wood and a cheap finish, no cartridge counter, not what I was looking for.
When the Featherweight came in, it was a mutt. I had been seriously misled about the condition of the gun, so I told Jim I'm going to have it sent back, to box it up, and get me a quote for return shipping. So the gun that had been shipped to Jim for $35, that was returned in the same box with the same packaging that it came in, cost me $85 to ship back through Jims shop. I paid without complaint because I had after all asked him to ship it back.
Then a week later I asked him to transfer a couple of 1886's that I had ordered. I gave him their contact info, and requested he send them his FFL. He sat on that paperwork for over a week. The seller made multiple attempts to reach him, and he never picked up his phone. I finally had to call them both, make sure they were both available and in shop, and coordinate Jims sending and receiving his info myself.

When the first 1886 came in, Jim told me I was a "problem customer" and I was not welcome back in his shop.

So I would not recommend this shop to anyone. Jim is only reasonable to deal with if you are handing him cash for guns he has on hand without haggling.
As soon as you step outside the line of just handing him cash, as soon as you require him to start providing services he advertises as offering, such as transfers, shipping guns, or anything that requires him to get off his rear and actually do work,
He becomes a huge PITA to deal with.

his customer service is garbage. When I shipped the Remington Rand through him, He refused to ship anything other than priority mail. I requested registered mail as it was both cheaper to insure for $5k, and much more secure, but Jim REFUSED to do the extra work to have it shipped by registered mail, and the package that would have cost me $50 to ship through registered mail instead cost me $140 to ship and insure through priority mail. Stuff like that, no willingness to do anything that requires any extra effort whatsoever.

I pop into Doc's once in a while to see what they have in stock. There's always something new on the wall or under the counter. I've bought one firearm from them and the transaction was smooth. Also they're always happy to chit chat about the lastest gun laws or whatever else comes up. I'd rather shop local than at a big box store any day.
disappointed

Cons
  • not much ammunition
  • poor communication between employees
I was excited when I found a TNW Aero Survival Rifle in 10mm. I came back after a couple months and it was still on the shelf (on consignment). I had them contact the owner with my "lowball" offer, they called me later that evening with a counter offer, that I accepted, I told them I had the cash in hand, but would not be able to come in until the following Monday/Tuesday (they said that'd be fine). I returned on Monday (cash money in my pocket, "Assault Rifle" training form in hand, and a big grin on my face) to find the rifle with a "SOLD" sign hanging on it. assuming it was for me, I told the guy behind the counter that I'd like to pay for my rifle and start the paperwork, he then told me it was already sold (to someone else)

apparently, after accepting my offer, they changed the price tag on the rifle, and someone purchased it that weekend before I could get back to town

this is not the kind of "customer service" I'd expect from a small business that I want to support
