I am not a fan of shotguns for home defense. Depends on your living situation, but if my wife got held hostage and I need to take a shot down my hallway with a shotgun, I will take her out along with the assailant. I would rather use frangible ammo in an ar-15. Each to his own though.

The OP's question was about loads for a fusil de boudoir. I would not take a hostage shot with a #000 elk load either. Best to have a choice of tools enabling you match the situation.
