Thats exactly it.
Many manufatures install Heli-coil type fasteners in polymer & aluminum parts the will see stresses beyond what the parent material can support. Not unusual at all.
 
Not Helicoils, but rather Nutsert type threaded brass. Very common for polymer and aluminum where the host material is not as thick as the insert is long and/or is softer and you need to thread something in that is hard (usually steel).

Nutserts often have knurled ridges around the outer circumference, and, depending on the type of insert, have some type of knurled flattened edge on the side inner to the insert. These help hold the insert in place. It is quite possible that these inserts were in place when the polymer was molded.

Much better than threading plastic itself.
