In Colorado it has been my experience that we can hold someone for 72 hours if an officer can articulate that "the individual presents a threat to themself or others". Usually the 72 hours commences with a visit to the ER and then transport to the local "mental health facility"... Taking their weapons would involve a court order showing dangerous intent on the part of the individual in question and a search warrant..
