Not only does the safe provide secure storage, but out of sight, out of mind.

On the down side, you would most probably need some source of electrical power unless you went out of your way to provide backup power or a backup method for lifting the safe.

Back-up hand crank socket disguised as a central vacuum wall socket.....

I think a reasonably handy and mechanically inclined person could make their own lift. There are cargo and wheelchair lifts out there now. The key would be to find one that could lift a good safe easily and also preferably have some kind of mechanical backup - or maybe a person could use a battery backup.

I would not keep my home defense shotgun or handgun in there and I don't need 30-40 guns right away to defend myself or my home.
Pretty sure Reno was just having fun. I would hope no one keeps everything in any real safe. One of my safes has the key pad instead of dial which is of course faster but, I still of course never have all guns locked away. I keep both safes in the house in places they are not readily seen but this set up is a whole different league. Many break ins the people would come and go and never even know there was a safe there. Lot of these mouth breathers would not be able to get into a decent safe but, they may screw one up real good trying to beat hell out of it and such. With it out of sight like this good chance it would never be touched.

It just occurred to me that a variation of this would be kind of kewl; a closet that you stepped into, push a hidden button and you descend into a large gun room.

Yes, I know you could have a hidden door to a hidden room on the same floor level instead, but that would not be as kewl and it be detectable from the outside. A hidden basement is better IMO.

I like Herman's idea for the Munster mansion. Replacing fire breathing iron for dragon of course.

Yeah, a variation I have thought of before for the earth bermed shop I want to build when I move; build a concrete (ICF) safe room (preferably with an escape tunnel) into a hill first behind the shop with the back wall of the shop being the front wall of the safe room, but with a thin concrete layer over the door so that while the rest of the shop is being built the contractors do not know the safe room is there.

Or something to that effect.

Easier than a basement.

Cool concept but.. that requires at least 3 levels to a place...
Basement/ground hole for safe
Ground floor
2nd floor floor for the closet thing to go up into.
On the other hand...
Some very old, large houses had a "dumbwaiter" or something like that for laundry/items.. that could be a good place for a small safe?

Personally.. I'm more in favor of these hidden compartment ideas... a bit more portable unless bolted to studs and the floor with hidden bolts
