It would seem that a lot of the reliability that comes with Glocks has as much to do with the QC that takes place upon assembly as it does with the components themselves. With all of these moving parts and parts under force, a little gunsmithing could go a long way. I bet anyone who builds their own clones (albeit not with the cheapest parts one can find) could probably have a very reliable pistol if they brought it into a gunsmith to have it tuned. There may need to be a slight bit of material removed, some springs swapped, extra polishing, etc.
I can certainly see the allure of building one's own pistol and I liken it to building an AR, which has been very popular over the last decade +. "Mostly" drop-in parts with some wrenching and maybe some use of a mallet. Most of the parts are pretty darn close to spec but you might need some extra knowledge and tools in the event that something is slightly off.
