Survivalism is a social movement of individuals or groups (called survivalists or preppers) who proactively prepare for emergencies, including natural disasters, as well as disruptions to social, political, or economic order. Preparations may anticipate short-term scenarios or long-term, on scales ranging from personal adversity, to local disruption of services, to international or global catastrophe. Survivalism may be limited to preparing for a personal emergency, such as job loss or being stranded in the wild or under adverse weather conditions. The emphasis is on self-reliance, stockpiling supplies, and gaining survival knowledge and skills. Survivalists often acquire emergency medical and self-defense training, stockpile food and water, prepare to become self-sufficient, and build structures such as survival retreats or underground shelters that may help them survive a catastrophe.
Use of the term survivalist dates from the early 1980s.
Seems like most people that buy a gun get an itch...to buy more guns. Eventually we all have multiple.
But, for the sake of argument, let's assume a fairly bad SHTF scenario:
- Economic collapse a-la Great Depression
- You're out of work and about to be homeless
- You're not alone and...
So, I just wrapped up the three novel series, dubbed "The Hot War", by Harry Turtledove. The books in the series are Bombs Away, Fallout, and Armistice. Not a bad summer read. Deathless prose? No, but a real treat for the history nerd, and just a delightfully stimulating set of books in the...
So, something we did a couple summers ago was decided on one handgun and one long gun that would be the "primaries" for preparedness purposes that we would do a lot of regular practice with. I went with a SBRed/suppressed AR for the long gun and a Model 29 for the handgun. The revolver just...
Anyone have real world experience with these? Anyone now of a similar device in concept that I should look at? They aren't cheap by any definition and they cost more than the conventional generator we installed some years back. (As they become more common, I hope the price goes down.)
As the...
I don't personally smoke cigarettes, having given up the habit over twenty years ago. My wife never has, to the best of my recollection. (I do enjoy the occasional fine cigar, but that is another matter.) A fictional work I am currently reading reminded me of how the product is used as a form...
The title kind of says it. Are there any good SHTF books you'd like to see turned into a film?
I'll get us started:
Lucifer's Hammer (1977): As far as I know, it never has been made into a film. It is one of the better ones in the genre. It could either be set in the original time...
So, my beloved and I are up in Eugene for the very wacky cocktail party, of sorts. Alas, this one was not nearly as delightful as the last one, though we had fun together. There will be other antics in the summer months, including trips farther north, so other adventures are on the way, but I...
Good article by Daisy Luther. Dang it, I've got two propane tanks that need fillin'. Maximum effective range of any excuses is zero meters, right @Stomper?
25 Excuses the SHTF Won't Care About - The Organic Prepper
SHTF doesn’t care about inclement weather – snow, hail, tornadoes, pouring...
been thinking about this lately and decided it might be a good discussion. If SHTF in Oregon how many of us would actually group up to fight for the constitution? I’m talking like openly rebel against the state. How much do we let be taken before we stand up? How long would we be able to fight...

This is a recap of our recent experience during the wildfires currently burning in Southern Oregon. There's much involved and I want to give an honest and accurate recounting of events, so this will probably wander a bit.
The fires actually started on July 15th due to lightning strikes and...
So, something we've been working on for a bit is a GMRS setup for family communication for in general and for during a disaster. I am amateur radio licensed, while my wife is not. However, my GMRS license covers the family, including her. Our setup is, essentially:
A mobile GMRS rig in each...
Cascadia Event Book Review and Resource Guide
"Preparation through education is less costly than learning through tragedy." — Max Mayfield, Director National Hurricane Center
I thought it might be helpful to put together a book review and general resource guide on the topic of surviving a...
So, I've seen their various offerings on this score:
A six-shot, snub-nosed revolver, in .38 Special that can be had at $220—$280 a pop. They come in blued and stainless steel, with or without a hammer spur. If they work, they are tempting to buy a few to stash away for as a simple...
So, I recently acquired a Model 29. It was not added for a defensive piece, but rather because I just like them. Also, maybe, it would be good for bowling pin shooting, and most certainly for target shooting.
That said, it is a solid, nicely built wheelgun, that fits my hand well, so there is...
Some months ago, I was in a voice meeting with, among a number of other individuals, the Commissioner of Financial Institutions in Puerto Rico. There were other government officials, at least one lawyer, management types, and IT professionals. I was one of the latter. The chief concern of...
I want to get a bolt action 5.56 that will accept AR style mags. The only two I have found so far are the Ruger and the Mossberg below. I really like that the Mossberg has iron sights (even though I plan on using a 1-4x or 3-9x optic primarily). I have read (it seems) that the Ruger is more...
I am curious if anyone has had experience with these devices. I am looking at the Yeti 1400:

A member of our household is Type One Diabetic (insulin-dependent). We have close to a year's worth of said insulin, and related supplies, on hand. It has to be, of...
