Give a read to The Battle for Guadalcanal by Samuel B. Griffith (USMC B.G. ret, commander of the 1st Marine Raiders on the island and later New Georgia).

A good friend of mine was on the island too, way back in '42.

My dad was in the the same area about the same time.

"I don't know what the hell this 'logistics' is that Marshall is always talking about, but I want some of it." -- Fleet Admiral E. J. King: To a staff officer. (1942)

In the Battle for Guadalcanal, Admiral Earnest King is described as: "he shaves with a blowtorch"

Sounds like an intense guy.
