I just had a conversation about 22 short, and 22 long ammo. It was the only cartridge to shoot in a Winchester model 77 22L. Rifle, tube feed back in the days. Mine has a four digit serial number dated back to 1955. What are your thoughts on shooting todays 22 Long Rifle ammo. And if I shouldn't do so where would I find some. Do they still make Long 22's.

The Winchester 77 magazine feed models were prone to jamming unless kept very clean.
The tube fed models were less so, but the one I had needed a very meticulous deep cleaning to make it reliable.

Just keep it clean and shoot it.
Any .22LR will be fine ... 'Course the rifle may favor one brand or bullet style over another.
1955 isn't that old in the firearms world.
( regarding the comment of using "today's .22LR ammo")

As noted .22 long's are very hard to come by today... .22 short's are slightly better.
But no harm for your 77 with modern .22LR.
