Having hunted with '94's (pre-64) and Marlin 336's (pre-1950), my pick for a saddle gun, ranch work, chasing hounds or thick cover where a scope is a drawback and weight savings for carry effort are important, I'd grab the ''94 every time.

For just about all other hunting, the 336 is a far better rifle. Significantly more accurate, scoped easily and an action that is smoother (and stronger for handloaders). Scoped, and with the shooter savvy on .30-30 trajectory, it is an entirely capable 200-yard deer rifle.

My 1948 336RC will rival my fat-barreled varminters for precision shooting. even with it's 1.5x Lyman Alaskan scope. None of my 3 pre-64 '94's (not even the .25-35) can touch it, even when the Lyman comes off.
