This was passed down to me through several friends, after their deaths. The last owner was a career soldier who decided to take it upon himself to honor our mutual friend with a thorough going over by a local gunsmith, and then regularly dragged it out for cleaning before it passed to me. This was perhaps 10 years ago. As a result, the action is butter smooth, and the finishes are quite good, though not perfect. Reduced to $525 hand to hand, local, otherwise buyer pays transfer/shipping as necessary.

I will say that is a nice gun. A very nice gun.

Sadly, I will say that the gun may well have brought your asking price, had it not been reblued and refurbished. Collectors with money to spend want these guns in original condition: kept in Grandma's attic since Great Grandpa dragged it behind his horse in 1899.

It is tragic that this gun was subjected to "refurbishing". As a good saddle-ring carbine in original condition (dragged behind Great Grandpa's horse), it might well have approached a similar asking price. As reblued, it may bring much less. I know this sounds absurd to some : the gun is (and I will agree) actually BETTER than it was before. But it is not ORIGINAL.

On the bright side, the gun still holds good value toward the somewhat new Cowboy-Action market, where these durable guns are considered very desirable. Some competitiors may prefer an "original but refurbished" against a replica.

Cowboy action rifles have to be in a pistol caliber, ie .45, 357/38, 25-20, ect.

but do agree, its at collector price, and right now its a very clean shooter.

Well, while I do appreciate the contributions of aficionados such as yourselves, my respect for the marketplace should be evident as I continue to reduce my price. My goal is to effect a sale rather than hold fast to an irrational expectation of value.

    Merry Christmas.

Now $750. At this price, this pre-'64 1894 will represent extraordinary bragging rights to the discriminating collector, but also the woodland hunter who appreciates the practical attributes of this beautiful rifle.

Great shooting guns, no recoil and hit deer with a "mighty whack", I have my dad's which has serial #856XXX, same year of manufacture. My dad shot deer with it every year up until a couple months before he passed on.

Anyone who wants a real gun to talk about around the evening campfire, get one of these, you're grandkids will tell stories about this rifle! I believe the current price of $525 is a great value.
