Ok so I LOVE my guns but I don't know why I need any more than I have. I have purchased what I have for specific reasons and I feel I am almost done. This is only for myself, so wife and kids are a different subject. But I am not a collector and I do not want to have to keep 20 different calibers of ammo.

1. Remington MODEL 870 EXPRESS TACTICAL (12G)

2. Ruger Precision Rifle (.308)

3. Custom built AR-15 (5.56)

4. Ruger 10/22 Takedown (.22)

5. Remington 700 STS (.308)

6. Springfield XDM 3.8" COMPACT MODEL (9mm)

7. Winchester 94 30-30

If there is a good reason other then collecting please let me know why and what. Also yes I know the great debate on (9mm vs .40 vs .45) and in the end I feel if you use the correct ammo a 9 will do the job 98% of the time.
I don't know but I got 10 coffee cups in my kitchen do I need another one probley no but if I see one I like I'll probably buy it lol never know I might break one

I have 2 coffee cups. no need for more. Just wash and repeat LOL. But thank you!

It gets really bad when you have to spend more time trying to decide which guns to take to range than it does for your wife to decide what clothes to ware out to a social. Simple is better but more means more fun.

There is one fatal flaw in your thought process. The word "NEED" is not part of the equation. "WANT" is the only criteria. When the commies go on about you don't "need" an "assault" weapon for deer hunting or or you don't "need" a hi-cap magazine they are feeding the wolf guarding the hen house. Never use need buddy or you will start down the slippery slope of no more new guns.

Very true!
When I go grouse hunting its the same.
Depending on the day it could be:

My .20 gauge trade gun. ( Original antique flintlock )
A .44 / .12 gauge combo gun. ( gun from the late 1840's to 1860's )
.38 caliber Royland Southgate long rifle
.32 caliber "Ohio" Long rifle ( antique circa 1850's)
.54 Hawken copy
.22 LR Rossi pump action rifle
.20 gauge Remington Wingmaster ( from 1960 )
.20 gauge H&R Pardner single shot

These are all my choices form the top of my head and pre coffee :D.
Having many different choices of firearms can make for some fun decision making for sure!
Depending on the weather or if its late season can all make for a different choice.

You are in luck sir. AR-10s are only made in .308
Well if you mean an authentic AR10 then yes. But a AR10 platform rifle can be had in many calibers.

The word "need"
I use the word need in the same context as lambene. What do I need to fill in the gaps? I need another 10mm pistol
I need another CETME or some other 308sa rifle .
And I 'need' a lever gun in 44mag,cause I want it real bad.
"Need" for a single free individual can mean you want it real bad.
As far as guns to fill in the gaps of your collection, the long barrel shot gun is the only thing I can see as being a 'need'
Oh maybe the 22 handgun

Boy, I should have checked in yesterday afternoon! Look what I missed? I didn't read every response, so forgive me if I'm repeating something already mentioned.

Your list doesn't include a nice revolver, with at least a 4" barrel for the range.

Here in yUK I have -

2 x .308Win
2 x 7x57 Mauser
2 x 7.5x55 Swiss
1 x 6.5x55SE
1 x .45-70 Govt
1 x .58 carbine BP
2 x .577 Snider-Enfield BP
1 x .44cal BP Ruger Old Army
1 x .357Magnum Ruger Super Redhawk
and seven assorted .22 rifles.

Do I WANT more? You bet.

Do I NEED more? Maybe not.

Will I ever actually HAVE any more?

Nope - read the first line of my post again. :(

At the risk of flaming ...
Just as one example I would say that if you hunt in North America then all you "need" is a:
.270 , .308 or .30-06 rifle
.12 gauge shotgun of some sort
And a .22LR rifle
That would cover all of your hunting "needs".

But where is the fun in that?

Are you getting enjoyment out of what you have?
If so then maybe your "needs" are met.
Luckily we are not restricted to "needs".

Buy what you want and like and your "needs" will more than likely be covered.
Andy

You have only 1 compact pistol. I would think a nice full sized handgun with "high" capacity magazine is in order. Also, I can't believe no one has mentoned the lack of a 1911 on the list!

It is a difficult thing to say just what someone else "needs".
People collect and shoot many different types of guns.
What you like and enjoy may be different that what I like.

My taste in firearms runs to wood and blued steel , preferably old.
I feel my "needs" are well represented in my collection.
There are a couple of guns from the 1780's to a '43 dated 03A3 , a 870 from 1960 and a Colt series '70 from 1972. Just to give a few examples.
Your firearm tastes and interest can define your needs.

My friend Dave and I travel around and discuss firearm and fur trade history.
In order to show just what guns and equipment that were used we "need" our collection.

But our collection may not interest everyone ... so their needs are not met.
Again I must say , buy what you like , want and have an interest in.
You are the one who needs to be happy with what you own.

Agree with Andy, rounded out collections depend on what rings your bell...

A perfect basic collection could include the following, in my opinion, in pairs, just as the good Lord intended:
Handguns
- 1911
- Browning Hi-Power
- Walther PPK in .380
- S&W K-22
- Colt Detective or S&W Chief (2" 38)
- 4" Colt Python (1 blued, 1 stainless just because)
- 6" Colt Anaconda (1 blued, 1 stainless, just because)
- Any flavor of Ruger .22 lr semi-auto

Shotguns
- Remington 870 12 gauge (1 setup for home defense)
- Remington 11-87 12 or 20 gauge
- Short barreled coach gun in 12 gauge
- long barreled over/under 12 gauge for trap/Skeet/sporting clays/hunting

Rifles
- .22 lr lever action
- .22 lr bolt action
- .22 lr semi-auto (Ruger 10-22)
- lever action .357 or .44
- lever action .308
- bolt action .308
- lever action 30-06
- bolt action 30-06
- M1A1 - no explanation needed
- Ruger Mini 14
- AR platform - .22 lr
- AR platform - .223/5.56
- AR platform - .308

This would be my "need" collection, there's many, many, many more on my want lists... Glocks, XD's, M&P's, .50 BMG's, the list goes on and on and on...

I was just wondering. [And maybe this is a huge hindrance to new gun buyers.]

You go out and find the guns you like. And then armed with knowledge specific to these guns. You get a good price negotiated and buy.

I do this with WWII guns, Winchesters and other old guns that have been historically popular.

I feel comfortable in my ability to know what I'm buying. And can spot a diamond in the ruff. Because I've bought and cleaned up so many old guns.

That takes a lot of knowledge. And experience. [Investment of time.]

Inexperienced gun buyers probably don't feel comfortable doing this. And so they aren't inclined to consider these guns. o_O
