So I had an errand to run in Newberg (down the mountain) today. I noticed on my way back home that there was a cell tower on the south side of the mountain too. So I stopped on the edge of town, within about 1-2 miles of the tower, direct line of sight. Phone was showing 5G mode and -87 dBm and I thought therefore I would get real good thruput. Nope. About the same as usual - about 15mbps.

So I went up the mountain and stopped within about half a mile of the tower and got 310+mbps in 5G with -99dBm.

Then I got within about 100 yards of the tower and got 335+mbps.

That was within the car. I assume the antenna on the car works for the cell phone?

I got home and tried from my driveway - I got less than 3 mbps. I tried out on the road (tower visible, but different tower on the north side of the mountain) and got about 5 mbps. I went inside the house and got 15 mbps.

Go figure.

Anyway - I should have forced it to 4g LTE and tried it again when I was really close to the tower, but I doubt I would have got those kinds of speeds. Proximity certainly helps.

Unless you have a special setup, your car antenna doesn't have anything to do with your mobile phone. Your phone may get much better signal just outside your car than inside, depending on a lot of factors.

I am given to understand that the antenna on my car is supposedly one for the radio (which has satellite capability) and the cell phone and emergency calls for help (special button for that). There is a special connection in the console for a cell phone, or you can use bluetooth - I use the BT because the connection in the console is different for each phone and does not work with any of my phones, plus it is much more convenient.

OK so that's what I meant by "special setup". :D

Here on the mountain almost nobody has cable or fiber and DSL is very slow (< 2 mbps), so the people who live real close to that tower (there is a BnB just across the road) must really like the fact that they get super fast thruput.

The POs of my property said that they considered allowing a cell tower on the property, but for some reason turned it down.

Heretic, since 5G towers are effective over a smaller footprint (shorter radius) perhaps you should inquire with the cell companies about locating a tower on your property.

If nothing else, the steady income from a tower might be a positive in selling your property when you are ready to move.

Locals say the cell co did inquire about locating on my property back before I bought it. Either previous owners nixed it, or the cell co. decided not to.

They probably would not now as they have the coverage they feel is needed to service the customers here.

It's not just healthcare that we pay more for less for.

This is because of limited NSA bandwith to monitor all the calls. It slows down the system.

Seriously, China has spent billions putting up a 5G system, and they can't even crack the top 25? And they are raising monthly rates to 4G users to help pay for it? Totalitarian Socialism at work.
China's 5G system is crap. They didn't implement it properly. It may never hit the speeds it was supposed to.
