I worked in the Xerox engineering group in El Segundo at the time Jobs acquired the technology. Idiot tonerhead management didn't have enough vision to sell anything but copiers and fumbled any number of technology markets.

Most of us just gritted our teeth and cursed their stupidity when they handed it to Jobs.

Two other examples are the technology that became Adobe and the technology that became 3Com and the Ethernet industry.

Thanks. That's pretty much what I had read about Xerox PARC - visionary engineering crippled by bad management.

Yeah Xerox pretty much had all of the features of the modern graphical operating system and business computing network working 100% in-house before anyone had even so much as thought of many of those features.

Just like you said.. Xerox management looked all of this awesome technology that existed nowhere else and said "stop screwing around, we're a copier company!"

Just a terribly run tech company, sort of like Commodore of the same era, who was light years ahead of Apple at many points (remember the Amiga?) and yet couldn't get marketing or sales to connect the dots as to WTF they had or how to sell it.
