In a world of "bigger is always better" 50 BMG's are cool and fun to shoot but if you are looking for something that shoots long distances and shoots flat the 50 ain't it.

Most of the big 338's, espcially the 338 CheyTac, out perform the 50. Now if you're looking to shoot thru a vehicles engine block, the 50 is what you want.

Whats the largest range in the NW? Is there a location where one can do 1000-2000 yard shots? (not saying I am currently capable of doing so but i know they BMG is :D)

As for .338 Lapua, I have never seen that in a caliber ammo in shop before. Is it hard to get a hold of? .50 BMG I see just about everywhere but Walmart lol

I can not find data on the 338 CheyTac wildcat cartridge, got any? The 408 has less than a 2 moa advantage at 1500 yards over the 50 bmg and less than 3 moa at 2000 yards. The 408 and 50 bmg rifles are both heavy. I will drag a 338 mag out into the woods before I do the others.

ETA; Sorry for the poor formating, I can not make the columns display neatly.

You can get 2800fps out of a 50 but your not going to get it to shoot MOA. Most accuracy loads are right around 2600fps and getting them to shoot MOA is usually on a at best accuracy level.

Most of the big .338 are shooting the 300gr. pills with a BC of .785 A standard 338 Lapua is 2700-2800fps the 338 Lapua AI will do 3000fps and the CheyTac 338 is in the 3600fps range with the 300gr pill and any of the above will easily shoot MOA or better all day long.

The 50 is a hoot to shoot no doubt about it but it's not a precision shooter. It wasn't really meant to be a sniper rifle but rather a big badazz powerful weapon that could shoot thur things. Walls, trucks, pretty much whatever it wants. One of the biggest problems with the 50bmg is it's nearly impossible to get decent brass for it. The avaible brass for the 50 is really inconsistent and all over the map with weight, volume, thickness, etc. etc.

This is no dig on the 50BMG in any way but if you are looking for a long range precision shooting rifle the 50 isn't going to be on your list.

Better not tell that to Lee Rasmussen. :) I watched him shoot a 1.9" group at 550 yards in Eatonville WA. He did even better later on. Look here. http://accurateshooter.wordpress.co...-sets-new-1-9557-50-cal-record-at-1000-yards/

50 BMG brass is not that bad, unless you are buying the stuff off of E-bay that was stepped on at the range for who knows how long. The brass I use is fairly consistant and the necks can be turned to improve them. While my own LAR is not worth high grade components, there are rilfes out there that do well.

I plan on getting a nice long range rifle someday and the 50 is on my list; if I can afford it, it will be on a BAT action.

A friend has the Bohica on a S&W Lower and I have one coming in that will be on a RR lower. They are a blast (no pun intended) to shoot and shove about like a 20 guage. I also found a heck of a deal on new Lake City Ammo .... $299 per 150 rounds (+ 30 S/H) which comes out to about $2.16 a round. My friend also reloads. 'Tis gonna be a lot of fun this summer and our median range will be 1,000 yards. :)

hunting with a 50BMG has some good points,,,,with one shot you kill, clean, butcher and cook your meat at the same time

bad point yes its dead, cleaned, butchered, and cooked....but damn lil of it

Exactly my thought. Almost as much grin, a "little" more practical.
