I wanted to give my new concealed carry a run through of various self defense ammo, but I never got to finish my ammo shopping list. Hornady's new Critical Duty being new has been hard to find, I specifically want the +P 9mm, but I'll settle for the non +P to test both.

Have you seen this stuff locally in stock?

Well, did a LOT of digging and this is all I could find...

    115gr 9mm Hornady Critical Defense - $16.99 (Wrigley Sales)

There are a lot of other carriers out there for standard 9mm Critical Defense, but Wrigley's was the cheapest I could find...I could not find 9mm +P Critical Defense for you ANYWHERE so I found a bunch of 9mm +P rounds for you in case you wanted some kick/balistic comparison by at least the grain of bullet.

    124gr 9mm +P Winchester Ranger Bonded - $28.95 (SGAmmo)

    115gr 9mm +P Speer Gold Dot - $29.99 (Kyle's Gunshop)

    124gr 9mm +P Speer Gold Dot - $19.82 (Cheaper Than Dirt)

    115gr 9mm +P Magtech Gaurdian - $12.99 (Natchez Shooters Supply)

Critical Defense is the old stuff, Critical Duty is the new stuff made for penetration. Only been for sale maybe 2 months now.

Yeah haven't seen the critical duty on shelves yet but Defense has been out for a long time. Great round and all my potential self-defense pistols have them. .357 .38 9mm. I wish they made a 7.62x25 critical defense that would be a spectacular round.

    Try #2

    135gr 9mm Hornady Critical Duty - $22.99 (Midway USA)

    135gr 9mm +P Hornady Critical Duty - $22.99 (Midway USA)

    135gr 9mm +P Hornady Critical Duty - $18.99 (Discount Ammo Sales)

135gr 9mm Hornady Critical Duty - $18.99 (Discount Ammo Sales)

135gr 9mm Hornady Critical Duty - $26.14 (Personal Security Zone)

    135gr 9mm +P Hornady Critical Duty - $19.99 (Aeon Arms)

Hope this helps...a lot of the sites I went to were listed as "Out of Stock" so good luck...Midway is probably your best best. Let me know your test results, will ya? I love Hornady.

Not a fan of Critical Defense, if your main goal is to safe guard against penetration in a home defense situation sure, but if you are ever in a situation that you need bullet penetration, you're SOL with this stuff which is why they created the new Critical Duty.

Pretty sure he was listing two separate dealers, hence the comma :)

Edit: And yes, Federal HST is great stuff, highly recommend you try it if you haven't. Sometimes can be a little tricky/expensive to find but I love this round.

Federal will only sell HST ammo to dealers that intend to only resell the ammo to Law Enforcement Agencies only. And aparently they've been cracking down on dealers "not in compliance" with this request.

Federal doesn't even have HST on their list of bullets on their homepage.

My take? I think the HST is just a modern day black talon.

Since the black talon had so much media hype and had to stop production, I think many of the ammo manufacturers have simply just listed this ammo as "LEO Only" and have instructed dealers to do the same. Obviously there is no law in owning Federal HST ammunition (or Black Talons for that matter) but I think it is just a legal defense pre-set in case the HST comes under the spotlight like the Black Talons did.

"Your honor, we list HST ammuntion as LEO Only and only sell it to a dealer that agrees to resell it to a Law Enforcement officer or agency, not a civilian. If a civilian used our products, that was not our intention in any way."

Get my drift? Then the pressure is put on the shop that sold the ammo (have to blame someone and sue someone now-a-days, right? After all, it can't be the shooter's fault!).

    It's a theory, anyways...

I just bought some Critical Duty from Cabelas in Lacey today. They had about 5 or so boxes of each when I left.

    I believe it was $21 for the 135gr 9mm (25)
    and $22 for the 135gr 9mm +P (25)

Not bad prices at all, too bad we don't have a Cabelas in the metro area.

As for the black talons... production was never stopped. Winchester dropped the black talon name and stopped using the black moly coating, but they still exist as the Ranger Ts to this very day.
