This report is an indicator of why the current panic is stupid. Before outlaying thousands of dollars on inflated black rifles and magazines, next to no one did the political math.

There are some newly minted D Senators, such as in North Dakota, for whom an AWB vote would be career suicide even six years from now.

In 2014, six red state D Senators are defending seats. They don't have the margin for error to vote in an AWB or mag restriction.

In 2013, any gun legislation has to go to the House, where it is dual tracked to the Judiciary and the Rules Committees. Both are headed by rock ribbed NRA backers who would not let anything like that come to a vote.

Normally, a discharge petition could dislodge a gun control bill from committee with enough signatures from the membership. Problem there is over half of the House has some flavor of an "A" rating from the NRA to protect.

An AWB II is never going to reach Obama's autopen. In fact, by not even making a serious attempt at goring his own sacred cows in Hollywood, the Administration has given cover to every politician in Congress who wants to point at such as evidence of the President's insincerity about comprehensively attacking the violence problem in this country.

At most there might be some tightening up of transfers without background checks and a more comprehensive reporting of mental health to the instant check system. There's an outside shot at making it easier to civilly commit the possibly deranged too.

Banning the AR-15? Not going to happen. Banning imports like the Saiga? That might be done with executive orders, even though they all enter as sporting rifles and are converted domestically. Might ban the import of Wolf and other steel cased import ammo too as "non-sporting." That kind of crap needs to be fought in court.

Yes we must keep the pressure on, but I think the tide has started to turn.

Biden knows it, he's not mentioned AWB in the past few days. Someone in Washington finally ran the numbers and now they are changing course. I think we have more to fear at the state level (mag ban) than national level. Hopefully that starts to change course too.

Do not take this news as a positive sign to diminish our efforts. We must keep up the writing to our representatives, state and federal on our gun rights. Because if we let up, it will be seen as a sign of our weakness and disunion. Keep the pressure on, don't give up!

The rub is, as the Founders knew, "The price of Liberty is Eternal Vigilance"... they'll be waiting for us to let our guard down, so we have to be constantly watching from ALL avenues until at least the 2014 midterms... because even if they can't ram it through directly, it's quite conceivable they'd embed it in some "Must Pass" bill like a budget (those thousand-pagers like ObamaCare have lotsa room to hide things" or have the Senate gut a bill in Conference Committee and force it over to the House for up-or-down... rumor has it that Manchurian McCain would be quite on board with it to punish the icky freedom-lovers for not properly bowing and scraping and accepting his Unquestionable Wisdom... HE shoulda been Bad Check Barry's Veep, as the biggest difference between them is age and "brand label".

It cant happen like that. They wont even pass a budget. Still have not since they got in.They have a check book and keep writing checks with no money in the account.

Like someone said already: we must remain vigilant. They might just leave it up to the states or they are counting on us taking our guard down. The fact remains the same fir now: ammo is expensive and scarce and gun manufacturers are back ordered for the foreseeable future. Until that changes, do not give up. I still expect everyone to show up at their state capitols next Saturday.

I'm way more worried on a state level then a fed level. Oregon is controlled by libs that will get reelected.

Here's a list of the town hall events in Oregon. Attend, bring your family, girlfriend etc and speak up:

Calendar | Democratic Party of Oregon

I'm not a (D) but if you are, attending the local party meetings might help, too! Explain how this measure will hurt your party in rural areas.

Frame this as a rural vs urban issue, and it could garner more sympathy...
