Depends on what you want them for. Basically same gun just diff furniture. I'd choose to trade it in for something more my style but if I had to choose I'd go with something cqb. Until I'm too old, then it's sit n wait with something that has a bit of range to it.

The tanker has more of the nostalgic feel to it.

I'd buy the tanker, then fit it with the socom stock. I'm not a fan of the "socom" billboard on the operating rod. Looks too tacticool but the wood stock on the tanker is a little chunky for my taste. Supposedly it's slightly meatier than the standard wood stock but the parts all interchange freely.

Great input

Friends don't let Friends Archangel.

I vote M1A Tanker. It would handle nicely. Then maybe scoop up a SOCOM Muzzle Thread Adapter from Delta P Designs, and choose a muzzle device that you like.

If you're seeking a rifle to mount an optic and accessories, I suggest choosing a different rifle. I'm not implying that you can't mount optics and/or accessories; it's just more involved because you're adapting the rifle rather than simply attaching the item.

The tanker does not handle as nicely as people seem to think. It's got a fat, chunky stock. Maybe it's great for people with XXL hands. The tanker with a socom stock would be ideal in my eyes.

I find myself wondering on this type of thread, how many people giving opinions own any/all of the options listed? How many people have handled/shot them? And how many are just stuttering out Internet nonsense because Reddit said so

Owned a Tanker (full disclosure it had a plastic stock :( ) and have shot versions of the M14 SOCOM, but not 100% sure I have shot that version

(My apologeez to the Navy guy that I offended. It was meant as a term of endearment.)

MK14 MOD0 before the Badger rings were procured.
(Shown with LaRue mount reversed)

Also have spent some time with the M14 EBR-RI - they were fairly easy to get because they were heavy.
(I have posted pics in the Forum before)

  • M1A Standard w/medium weight barrel 1:10" twist - Was in birch when I received it.
  • M1A Bush Rifle - Was in walnut when I received it.
  • M1A SOCOM16 - Was not properly mounted in the Sage chassis when I received it, so I tried it in the walnut before acquiring the parts to properly mount in the chassis.
Definitely no expert on these rifles, but I know a guy.

..and I don't know how to read a Red-it.

Edit to add: Those wooden stocks come in different profiles, The Tanker probably does have a heavier profile than the one I tried.

I own the socom 16 and I swapped the black stock and scout rail to the tanker/classic wood style (which I think looks better). However, if a person was to want to get the most out of this rifle, I'd probably get the cqb set up as it has an adjustable stock and pistol grip. The classic look is fun.. but at that point he might as well get the full sized standard or loaded M1A.

The socom is a great rifle! But I found myself enjoying it less than the standard sized M1A.
The carbine set up for a 308 (to me) seems a little bit like a waste and novelty. It's cool.. but the longer barrel and sight radius of the full sized takes better advantage of the 308 round IMO

I would choose the Tanker over the SOCOM version.
I have shoot both...and of the two that I shot...the Tanker felt and looked better .
( Both shot about the same for me )

As a side note...
I would also choose the Tanker because when I as in assigned to SOCOM I used ( mostly ) a M21 or a M4 Carbine with the M203 attached.
The Tanker looked and felt more my M21.
Also I ain't a fan of the the dumbazz Bill board proclaiming "SOCOM" on the other rifle....:D
Andy

Edit to add....
In the interest of honesty....
My opinion here doesn't really matter...since if I had the coin for either of the rifles in the OP...
I'd get something that loads from the muzzle ...
Or a Pre-64 Winchester Model 94 in .30-30...
Or an older pre-safety Marlin 336 or 36 in .30-30.
