I have both enjoy both. WINCHESTERS are straight Marlin have a grip

Not all Marlins have a pistol grip, both guns pictured in the OP are Marlins. The Marlin 1894 and some 1895 Guide Gun have straight stocks. More Marlins.jpg

Why not have both?

We're moving toward socialism, it's time to redistribute your lever guns, so pick the one you want to keep before the commies get in power and take them all.

All kidding aside, that's not the question, of course you can have both, (it's a free country, or use to be) but which do you prefer between the two?

I only own, heck, only shot, one lever gun and I'm not really sure what style it is. Hasn't seen daylight for some time now. I know it's a 60s Winchester... Gonna guess straight. Can't complain about how it feels

Don't know why, but I shoot much better with a straight stock than I do with the pistol grip.
I am faster and more accurate.

I did, and get your thought. The answer is that on Marlin, I prefer pistol grips although currently own two straight grip. Winchester Model 94 would look funky with a pistol grip, but the 71 is awesome. On my Savage 99, I prefer a straight grip.

There just isn't an easy answer to this conundrum...:)

All my levers are straight stocks except for the Marlin 336, which has a pistol grip. That said, I don't really notice a difference when shooting. I do think the straight stock looks better though.

Since I sold my Savage 99F in .300 Savage (which had a pistol grip) I only have a pistol grip Savage 99 in .308 and a straight stocked BLR '81in 7mm-08. I prefer the pistol grip in the bigger rifle calibers because the recoil can throw my trigger hand inside the lever around a bit and it is more comfortable inside the pitol grip one if shooting a bunch. My dad's .243 BLR '81 doesn't really bother me as much, but his 1895 Marlin GS in .45-70 straight stock definitely does.

I like the straight grip for looks and handling. The pistol grips seem "bulky" in my hands. All of my levers (Browning, Marlin, Rossi) have straight stocks, and I will admit that the straight stock on my BLR is harder to hang on to than a pistol-type grip. Had a Marlin 336 years ago and just did not warm up to the pistol type grip. The Marlin pistol-type grip isnt "bad", it just feels fat and isnt me. The pistol grip is better on hard kickers like .444 Marlin, but still prefer the feel and looks of the straight stock.
Broke the straight stock at the wrist on my Rossi, stupid me tripped on it in the dark- don't ask how... a new one is like $100.. Wouldnt have happened with my old 336 pistol grip.
Old School Fahrte..
