Now that Congressman Wu has resigned....I'm hunting for information on all the candidates that are planning to run so I can make an educated vote. Specifically regarding firearm laws, who's the front runner out of the bunch listed below?

"Democratic candidates Brad Avakian, the current state labor commissioner, and state Representative Brad Witt have filed to run.

Republican Rob Cornilles, a small business owner who ran against Wu in 2010, plans to announce his candidacy on Thursday, August 4.

State Senator Suzanne Bonamici, a Democrat, is also expected to announce her candidacy Thursday."

Scratch Bonamici off of your list----the only way she could be more anti is to change her name to Ginny Burdick.

Looks like maybe Avakian has possibilities: (from votesmart)

    Gun Issues
(Back to top) Related: Key Votes Ratings Indicate which principles you support (if any) regarding guns.

X a) Maintain and strengthen the enforcement of existing state restrictions on the purchase and possession of guns.

    b) Ease state restrictions on the purchase and possession of guns.

    c) Repeal state restrictions on the purchase and possession of guns.

X d) Allow citizens to carry concealed guns.

    e) Require manufacturers to provide child-safety locks on guns.

X f) Require background checks on gun sales between private citizens at gun shows.

    g) Require a license for gun possession.

X h) Other or expanded principles
    f) Assuming "private" includes non government individuals engaging in business sales. Otherwise, no

Avakian only seems to not want to take away all or gun rights immediately, but to do so gradually. I don't see anything pro-2A about him. votesmart was an interesting site to check out though. I couldn't find much real information about Cornilles.

I would suggest that you write a letter and send it to all of them. You can make it one issue (firearms) or more than one issue, but word it carefully and sent it to each candidate. Make the questions specific enough that they cannot waffle...like how do they view HR 822, and why? Remember, you have Oregon concerns, but this is for the natonal congress and will effect more than just OR.

Any good third party candidates? Be careful, biased questions will illicit biased responces. All politicos want to tell YOU what YOU want to hear.

Sen. Bonamici authored a bill that would ban the sale - including private sales - in Oregon of any firearm - including revolvers, rifles, and shotguns - that lacks a loaded chamber indicator, and any semiautomatic pistol that lacks a magazine disconnect safety. It would also be illegal to "rebuild" a firearm without "rebuilding" it with a loaded chamber indicator, or to "rebuild" a semi-automatic pistol without a magazine disconnect safety.

It would ban the sale of most firearms in Oregon (those that lack a loaded chamber indicator) and require gunsmiths to add those "features" if they rebuild a firearm.

First offense would be a misdemeanor, second and later offenses would be felonies. And as a felon, you couldn't own a firearm.

Oregon Senate Bill Sb0659 Gunsmithing Ban Bill

I don't know if any candidate could have a worse position on gun rights than hers.

I am going to say what I feel here about this. When I was in the military and always at election times the military is always a huge topic. Then you hear how much they care about the military and what they want and how they are going to help and after election they don't give a damn about you.

So on the topics of guns and this is just an example look at Obama and his record on voting about guns verses his talk. Hey just says what you want to hear but his record is one of the worst I have ever seen.

So when it comes to this topic you will hear what you want but when it comes time to bills and laws you will see a different thing.

I just don't believe a damn thing they say and the gun laws at this point are the least of our worries as not many people have many to go buying guns.

As this current admin is making the economy a little difficult to do anything.

If Gov Perry is so pro gun, why did he veto the Open Carry bill in TX?

Dave, I probably should, but I have been a Ron Paul supporter for almost 25 years now, I'm not going to change until, or if, I must.

I would love to find a pro-gun fiscal conservative who is liberal to libertarian on social issues and electable. Why these Christians can't stay out of our personal life's is disturbing. We need less laws, not more, especially ones as it relates to ones own beliefs.

That person is not out there as near as I can see, don't think Perry is it.

    IMO only.

There is such a candidate, Ron Paul (unless by liberal you mean social welfare liberal, Ron is not a socialist, but he is a constitutionalist and libritarian)

In my opinion Ron Paul is the only logical choice if you take to time to review the facts.
