Simply too danged hot for our liking.
Totally understand CamelFilter. Although Florida is cooler than other Gulf states like Texas, Mississippi, Alabama and Louisiana. The Northern part of the state actually cools down once late AUtumn starts and stays cool usually until April and is not nearly as hot as the Central or Southern part.

That being said, I have gotten quite use to hot and muggy summers living here in Tennessee and North Carolina. Both places that are just as hot as Florida, although maybe a little less steamy at night. Florida is steamy. Just thinking through a "survival" standpoint, it is kind of an ideal environment. It's the kind of place if you end up being homeless you don't have to worry about freezing to death or dying of thirst or heat exhaustion. FLorida is so jungly it's not hard to find shade and the water is some of the best in the country. As well, the temperatures don't rise much above 100F (sometimes they do in Northern FL) for too long.

And HUMID! Not only is it disgustingly sticky, but it'll ruin yer gunz...

I have loved Washington for 20+ years and have lived here over 30 and hate the way it's become, toxic politics. I'm probably not gonna be able to move out until I can twist the SIL's arm hard enough got them to move. If not I'm staying right here in my paid off house with bi tchin shop and will probably die on a warm pile of brass...

Oh I hear ya.

Depends what your concerns are. Mass die off & "living off the land", vs something a bit more realistic. Economic depression & hard times.

In the former, mayhaps a more temperate zone MAY be best for a solo go for solo folk. Not a great idea, by any means, but if you don't have nor want a community, it is what it is.

In the latter, more realistic future, near anywhere can be a go.

NB: many areas can be a go, depending. However we are not concerned about a "mass die off", so not planning on hobbiting up & withdrawing from society "to live up in the hills".

Now, if YOU figure living in a van down by a river as a valid permanent plan? Go for it. Better alternative would be a nice plot you own somewhere, can grow on, improve upon, and enjoy. Your not there yet, so work hard for it until you are.

Seems a rather wasteful bit of time, expense & such going around hobbiting between where you are now, and what your goal should be. YMMV.

Camelfilter, I was just describing the doomsday scenario. I don't want to be living in a car and travelling the country, obviously. However, I have to move out of my apartment as they are raising the rent and I lost my job. Nashville is ridiculously expensive, more expensive than even Portland now and wages are not any higher. So, I need to find a cheaper place to live and probably will move to a nearby city like Louisville, Huntsville, Chattanooga, TN Tri-Cities or Knoxville. Not 100% sure yet.. Still investigating and there are so few rentals right now that I will have to wait until end of month to find something near the time I have to be out of here which is Sept 1st. So, just doing some thinking of best place to go with how crazy the world is. I will be spending next year hopefully grinding away and preparing to get a remote software job. But, I may also have to be prepared that our economic will collapse and jobs may be few and far between. Not sure whats going to happen especially with someone like BIden who will maybe blasts taxes and demand perpetual Chinese style lockdowns.

The weather in the South can be livable, even if it is uncomfortable, although the winters can get bone chilling cold in Tennessee.. However, nothing like living in Midwest, East Coast or even Northern Idaho. However, Tennessee is colder than Oregon, even though it doesn't snow much (like ORegon). We get 60in+ rain here in Middle TN.. The greenest and lushest countryside, but I hear soil isn't all the best in certain places for growing crops. Although, I am sure you can grow things like tomatoes and such. It's funny type of soil here and the water level is pretty high.. It makes it impossible to build basements and growing deep rooted crops. You don't see a lot of corn around here, for example. However, there are areas that are pretty fertile and lush and there are lots of farms around here.

Hot is one, hot and humid is something else, not a fan.
Hahah, it's not really so bad when you get use to it. I will take heat and humidity over those windy, bone chilling cold humid days in Seattle or Portland where it doesn't seem like I can put on enough layers. That being said, Tennessee gets damn cold and even colder than Seattle or Portland in winter months , although you get warmer days mixed in between unlike the Northwest. Then we get killer tornadoes, derechos and insane wind storms when Spring comes around. Even SPring can be cold. Ever since I changed my diet and started drinking coconut water I find that I can handle the heat and humidity much better. Coconut water really replaces all the electrolytes you lose. When I first moved to North Carolina I thought it was unbearable. Started drinking coconut water and take Calcium, Magnesium ,etc and now i feel if a summer isn't hot and humid, it's not summer . Was 92F today here and with nice breeze and sunny and I am loving the tan I am getting :D

Whenever I'm in Ashland it feels as if I'm already in California. The city even has a sales tax!!!
I left the state of Oregon because of this.. Yeah, it wasn't so much like that when I lived there. Ashland had a great shooting club with I think an 800+ yard range. But, all the wealthy elitists bought up the whole damn town and declared it their own little autonomous zone , kicking all the locals like me out of there. Ashland definitely got raped . I haven't been there in over 15+ years and don't know how it changed. I sure do miss hiking the Siskiyous .. Back when I was there I rented a 1 bed apart for $450/mo with mountain view in back and was working as a dishwasher at Greenleaf restaurant. I also went to Southern Oregon Univ back when it was SOSC. Big party school and everyone loved to rage and have fun. Now, I heard that has changed and it have become some pretentious hipster run art school. There was no such thing as a hipster at that school when I went there. There was definitely a lot of scrubby mountain hippies, but they were a different variety compared to these liberals I see occupying Oregon today. Many of them liked hunting and owned guns and such.

I miss the old Ashland, but I highly doubt that exists anymore. I also hear the place is so expensive and pretty much is reminiscent of Aspen, CO or Jackson , WY. A playground for wealthy Californians or East Coast people now.

Of course, there is always Medford and Grants Pass if you want to live in State of Jefferson without yuppie elitism. I went to Rogue Community College in Grants Pass. My first time in College. It was pretty cool being in the woods and going to class.. Sometimes deer would show up and graze on the property. I miss that campus..

The Wetside of the Cascades (e.g., Portland, Seattle, etc.) are nothing compared to the cold winters on the Dryside (east of the Cascades). Record cold in Portland was -3*F, Seattle it was Zero. I have been in eastern Oregon and WA when it was well below zero, once in the Tri-Cities it was -22*F and the Columbia froze over (1978 IIRC).

Idaho colder yet, with wind in the southern portion. Montana? Average cold temp in the winter? In the teens, and near Livingstone it is not unusual for the temps to be below zero and the record is -42*F, colder than I ever experienced in Alaska.

On the wetside of Oregon, it sometimes gets down into the teens in the winter, but that is cold for here. Just the same, tolerable compared to the midwest and unusual that it gets much below freezing.

So yeah, while winters are gray and wet, not intolerable. I prefer warmer climes in the winter, but I have lived much worse places, and IM nothing much beats the Willamette Valley from Spring to Fall - rarely too hot, rather mild in fact.

Not everyone who votes Dem is a looney...I like to remind people of that sometimes. Remember...if there were only one political party in America, they would call us Russia.

Not only that, but we own guns too. Beyond that, we also believe in prepping for hard times. I must be a rarity. I usually vote Dem or independent, I own guns and know how to use them, and I am fairly well prepared for an economic collapse or a natural disaster.

As it happens, I am moving out of Washington state next year for good. My choice was NW Arizona, to a town on the Colorado River. Cheap homes, less tax, gun laws pretty sensible. And generally you can see the bad guys coming from a distance. Always a plus.

Although bugging out is one thing, I do believe finding a like-minded group in your community to quietly support and provide mutual aid to one another is better than risking a mass dispersal of an urban(ish) area. Getting trapped on a highway or being denied entry to towns would make you more vulnerable. I'd argue prepping wherever you are, in an area you are familiar with, is better.

As for the relocating during an economic collapse, unless you're near an area that provides a massive amount of food, I don't see much of a difference. Those with power and wealth will still be able to extract life saving resources from the people who create, grow, or mine it. Bezos will hire Academi to make sure he gets a much bigger corn ration. Just my two cents.

I'm not going to NW Arizona to bail or anything. It's just the place I decided to early-retire next year. All my family, my kids, even some of my friends have bailed the Great Northwest over the last few years. Most of them went to Nevada, Arizona, or SoCal. I figured why not join them? My family ended up here originally in the mid-60's when my dad took a Boeing job from an out of state recruiter.

Was like heaven on earth here back then. Today? Not so much.

My 2cents worth, most people moving up here sold their home in Kali for big bucks and have a nice retirement income. Another large percentage have a transferable skill or trade or maybe a couple of them to fall back on, and then you have the ones moving up here to get away from it, but have no marketable skills and expect that somebody will take care of them. What group do you fall in? If your looking for a place to weather the shtf storm, your a little late. You need to be in place already and putting down roots. I'm going to guess that you read the woodpile report, it's it's sorta like what mother earth news was to the early seventies, to all the urban hippies who wanted to get away.

Mike7b, I am accepting that it may be too late for me.. One thing I can offer is my conservative politics to help keep your state free.. That is just one thing.. My vote. And that is more important than you think. If you just want wealthy people to come up there, then you can enjoy seeing your city turn into a liberal cesspool and losing your freedoms like what happen to my home town of Ashland, OR and my home state of Oregon. I am an American refugee. What can I offer? Well, I am a hard worker, I never asked for any favors and don't expect any. After the tornado hit me here in Nashville, this Christian lady came up and gave me $50 saying she is so sorry, I said I don't want it.. She just threw it at me.. So I took the $50 and put it in the tip jar of the employee at coffeeshop I was at. I never accept anything I haven't earned and I am no beggar.

Yeah ,it could be too late for me.. I made a lot of bad decisions in life and also coming to terms I may not have a lot longer to live or even want to live a lot longer in this crappy world. I tried to keep the American dream alive, but fighting hard and devoting my life to a small family software business that I help build and kept alive in a world of Socialism, where government would drain and eat us up because we were considered "the rich" and against big corporations who somehow didn't get pummeled by all the rules/taxes our little business got attacked with.

The greatest thing I can offer is being a patriotic American who cherishes freedom, liberty and justice and would give my life to defend my neighbors if that was ever threatened to be taken away from them.

I am nobody special and nobody amazing.. I am just your average American Joe and not claiming to be anything better than that.

I do have 20 years of software experience , but my skillsets need a little upgrade and being off the market so long I just am not prepared for interviews. Hoping I can eventually start my own freelancing business. The entire IT industry is going fully remote with the Pandemic scare shutting down offices and killing businesses left and right. WIthin a year or two, if our economy doesn't totally collapse I should hopefully be able to land remote software work. I was caught off guard already preparing an exit strategy from the business, but still tried keeping it alive.. I regret I didn't walk away from it years ago. It is hard when you built something and devoted your life to it to just abandon it and let it die.

I don't have any friends, family or anything much anymore. My family has abandoned me (they sure loved me when I was making them money) and friends I have all moved different places and are not interested in me. I am not going to lie that last 15+ years I was working 70-80 hr weeks and didn't get a lot of the opportunities to go out and make friends. However, in this unconstitutionally locked down world where it is illegal even to go socialize and make friends I am pretty much screwed now.. ONe thing I have learned in life though is that you really cannot depend on anyone to help you out or have your back except yourself. Many so-called friends/family were not there for me; people I was sure had my back. There are such people in this world who will be there for you in hard times and cherish them and never take them for granted. Sadly, there are many other people in this country who are all alone as well. I would advocate in hard times Americans come together and help each other out, but many feel taken advantage of by the Authoritarian and Socialist system, which makes them mistrust their fellow American; especially, in hard times. Understandable.

Anyhow, as I wrote, I probably don't have the money and resources to move all the way to North Idaho and survive there. The cost of living there is pretty dang high for a rural area as well and it would be hard surviving off the land there, especially with the rough winters. Not that I can afford to buy land there. Way cheaper in Eastern TN. Maybe one day if I can make some money I will go and consider retiring out there. I actually wanted to move to Montana before it became Californicated. So , be careful just wishing for wealthy transplants to put money into your economy. They may also put money into stripping you of your freedoms and turn your state into where they escaped from. Don't look down on the hard working conservative man like me.. He doesn't want hand outs.. He wants to work and do whatever he can to be a respectable member of your society.

That being said, I am thinking pretty hard about headed to the Tri-Cities in Tennessee.. It's a pretty nice area , very conservative (as much or more than North Idaho) and one of the most scenic places in the East Coast being near the Smokey and Blue Ridge mountains. The area is green , lush and has temperate climate.. As well, the cost of living in Johnson City is like half of that in Coeur d'Alene. As I said if you are in the Pacific Northwest, North Idaho may be a viable option.. If you are in Tennessee like me, Appalachians may be the best way to go. Nothing beats the beauty of Idaho, Washington , Oregon and Montana. But, sadly, it's just not an option for all of us anymore, esp when survival is the most important thing. :(

Wherever you go, I wish you well.

Mayhaps find a good church that suits you. May be one way to re-socialize yourself as well.
Church would be interesting for someone of my background.. Definitely a good place for most people to go.. Have had a lot of Christian friends over the years. Here in TN, many just want you to convert to their denomination or don't really want to be friends with you. I'm in the heart of the Bible Belt.. Churches galore. I respect their zeal, morals and culture, but don't particularly like the polarization of the denominations. It is even more complicated when you are a Jewish guy like me. o_O

Well then synagogue or a non-demominational. Whatever pleases YOU.
