I find, "are you open to offers?" to be a polite way to open bargaining.
On the other hand telling someone "I'll give you" sounds rude and from there on out if they want it they pay full price!
I too have found the "I'll give you" phraseology presumptuous and rude. No matter, it is easy enough to, in a polite manner, cordially invite them to pound sand. :s0155:

For the "I'll give you's" I just laugh and say no. Unless I'm hungry or I think it's close enough. Honestly, I haven't been that hungry since '08 and generally the offers aren't even close to close enough.

A step beyond "I'll give you" are the "I never pay more than $x for one of those" guys.

Way back in the 90's, I told a buddy that I was going to a gun show, and he mentioned that another friend of his was looking for a pump shotgun, nothing special, just a solid 12ga.

I happened across a vintage Ithaca for something like $150, so I bought it. I called my friend, who put me in touch with his friend, who promptly tried to haggle me down on the favor I thought I was doing for him: "I never pay more than $125 for one of those".

Yeah, whatever. I got a weird vibe from the guy, probably wouldn't have sold it to him even if he hadn't done that. I kept the darn thing, and it quickly became a favorite- still have it, wouldn't sell it for triple. I never even considered buying a gun for someone else after that.

It's a good thing I stayed away from that guy; I heard later that he ended up in prison over some hinky gun stuff he was doing.

I can't believe you went that far for some random dude. The best I've ever done, even for good friends, was say "hey I know you're looking for X and I'm holding one in my hands, you better get down here if you want it"

Yeah I learned my lesson on that one, trying to do a favor for a friend by doing a favor for his friend, who turned out to be a total weirdo.

I've given a gun to good friends a couple times in the intervening years since then, but they were lifelong friends who I would trust with my life.

Several times I've helped friends get set up for reloading, on the cheap with older used equipment picked up at gun shows. The frustrating part is that they almost never actually use it. Lots of people say they want to reload, but few actually do.

"Would you take $***.**?" but not the day the ad came up. A week or so without it moving seems like the time to offer less.
If I really wanted something, and I have a number of times here, "I will take that ITEM for your price, in cash dollars". "Where would YOU like to meet?"

I can't believe I got stood up on my last big deal. My wife says be happy, you now have an extra $100.

So this may still be available for somebody.

On a Sunday?
That's low. Dude's going to hell for that one.

I had a similar thing happen recently. Someone had a great deal on a bubba SKS. I was only interested because I have the necessary parts in my decades old accumulation of odds and ends, to un-bubba it.

I PM'd, he replied the next day that it was available, I replied where do you want to meet? Silence. I assume he sold it to someone else and just didn't know the etiquette of selling on forums.

It didn't bother me, was for the best really. I do not need another gun, and absolutely don't need to spend the money. Hopefully someone else here got a good deal on a neat old rifle.

I had his number and tried to call at 15min past meet up time, went straight to VM. Still haven't heard back almost 2 hrs later.

Just bought a used rifle for a good price. Set the price right and they will buy.
I've seen this sentiment a lot but I have a P38 listed for substantially less than you could find from online retailers, and have for months. Atlantic Firearms is selling examples in worse cosmetic condition and with non-functioning triggers for more than mine, that actually runs.

I was going to trade a weatherby for less than I paid for it by a few hundred dollars. I decided I would keep it. Not going to play that game right now. I will put it back in the safe for now. It's not like I need to get rid of it.

I don't think it's a matter of no buyers really. I think it's no great deals plus the cost of doing the deals. Most of the stuff for sale on here is middle of the road, dime a dozen kind of stuff. There is not as much wiggle room in an under $500.00 plane jane deal with a $50.00 transfer fee as there might be with much higher end or more desirable one.
Agree

I don't give a bubblegum what some gold clad bank executive has to say about my spending. They don't live in reality with the rest of us.
