Since the dawn of "civilization", only it's much easier now with the way the government spies on you.

Wait, is this a trap?! Are you trying to data mine my thoughts?! (If so, better grab a drink or three. One for me please.)

For me it was the 80's that opened my eyes (early 20's) out in Colorado. Being from the south, that place was VERY STRANGE!!! I'd thought to settle there for the majestic beauty of the mountains, streams with a great gal but I'm glad I went back to Florida.
I took a contracting job which paid mega $$$ traveling which lead to Kalifornia :s0170::s0170::s0170:even in the 80's it was so toxic so I headed north to Wa. Some18-20 years later is whenTPTB in Wa went "Full Retard"!!!

When did it become so important by committee to decide what we as a people should buy, sell, do, make, drive, ect?
Simple answer: Facebook, twitter, smart phones, etc. people with low esteem wanting everyone's approval and hive mentality. Personally IDGAF what others think.

I'd argue that this has been going on since , well forever.

Cliques for example.

Cliques have been around since the first Izod Alligator was embroidered on Fred Flintstone's spotted shirt.:D
Someone always wants to be like the "cool kids"...and in my experience the "cool kids" need a lot of support and reassurance ...Hence cliques.

With all that said...
If everyone is thinking alike....then someone ain't thinking...

I mean, what do you think "fashion" is?

Come to think of it, it's been going on since Eve helped Adam choose a snack.

For me personally, I don't seek others approvals regarding the things I do or buy, exception is "She who must be obeyed", but that's a different story.

If I were looking at a particular item to purchase, and current or past owners care to provide input, I'd accept such opinions and points of view. I'd also seek out reviews from other sources, Consumer Reports, gun magazines, etc. Informed purchases are typically the better purchases.

Just one ole curmudgeon's point of view...

Works out good for a few people. Listening to a morning show today, Kim Kardashian just became a billionaire. Not sure what she sells, she must sell a lot of it though.

She got white guys to go for big butts. Seriously, when asked what she's famous for, her sister says "She's famous for having a big butt and a porno tape."

Since the first craftsmen were permitted to accumulate wealth with the permission of the king, the serfs saw that and wanted the nicer things they saw the craftsmen could acquire. Ever since then folks want to meet their basic needs but after that they want to keep up with the Joneses. Because we also all crave the acceptance of community the Joneses were probably judgmental bubblegums to make eveyone think they needed to keep up. They it was weaponized as advertising. We all get roped in to some extent, but some way more than others.

I spent the first half of my life valuing bubblegum most people didn't value, probably to fit in with other people who valued bubblegum most people didn't value. it wasn't till I hit my 40's that I truly started to not give a f*#(.
