Looks like an old Mauser. I had something similar when I was stationed in Germany years ago. I could be wrong though. Any markings?

got a reply...M1871/88 Dutch Beaumont-Vitali..........stamps on either side of the 1873, crown P, crown E.....11.5 mm x 51r

Not impossible to make it though, as a number of folks I know in the Historical Breechloading Small Arms Association of GB do.

I wouldnt fire this, there is a really deep rough rusty spot half way up the barrel
