What is done to a saiga 12 when it is converted? Is anything done internally or mechanically, or is it just stock and pistol grip, etc to make it like an ak?
Trigger group is moved forward to the original position right behind the mag release to make room for a pistol grip. Doing this triggers 922r so most people switch out the trigger group at the same time as well as stock, handguard, muzzle break, etc so as to have the proper number of compliant parts.
If you have a little bit of mechanical inclination, it is pretty simple and straightforward. Watch some youtube videos or Carolina Shooters has some on there website as well as all the parts you need.
I'd recommend converting because it improves the trigger pull, is more ergonomic, and it looks better. Plus it's a fun short project. The conversion process is simple, only take an hour or so with a drill and the proper parts. Carolina Shooters Supply is an excellent site and they have speedy shipping.
Not a S12, but you get the idea. Converted on top, unconverted on bottom.
