Status
I would consider how much/ how often you will shoot. If you max your budget on a .45 you will still need to plunk down $18 for 50 rounds of ammo. If you go .22, that $300 gun will will mean far more pulls of the trigger, IMHO.:)

I picked up a Kel Tec PF9 for a carry weapon. It was $270. Great shooting weapon, and nace and small if your looking to possibly carry. If your looking for a cheap long gun, the 10/22.
 
If you can find a used RIA 1911 I'd go that route. They are inexpensive but in no way cheap. As good as any GI M1911-A1 as you are likely to find. Not a competition gun but reliable and as accurate as the GI model comes. Also, their US customer service is second to none.

I bought one of these and a Kimber and when it came time to get rid of one it was the Kimber I tossed. Not due to resale value but I just liked the RIA a lot better.
