I wouldn't say that ammo cost stopped me from buying, but definitely gives me pause, for several old guns. So I see where you are going with this question.To put a spin on the OP question. What gun could you afford to buy but not be able to afford the ammo it shoots on a regular high volume basis.
Still the same. Gau-8 and the M134 Vulcan cannon in either M163 M113 mount or M167 trailer; the 30mm and 20mm ammo I believe are highly regulated as Destructive Devices per the NFA and probably ITAR?To put a spin on the OP question.
